I've cleaned fans with a vacuum cleaner before, but presumably it's not that easy with a laptop.

Yeah, do that with extreme caution though, Nog. You may end up breaking it otherwise.
Nah, my hoover is very robust.

Thanks Robster Brisk, but I still haven't recovered from finding out what you meant the time you offered to water my windowbox

Quote: AJGO @ November 30 2012, 1:44 PM GMTDoes anyone know how much it should reasonably cost to get a laptop fan cleaned/replaced?
I can't recall if we reached the fan when we opened your laptop at my place before?
Often they just need to have a liitle sticky cover lifted and a tiny drop of sewing machine oil dripped in, but it can be difficult to reach the fan to do that.

Filthier!
For some years I've always signed in to Messenger when I started the computer. This had the advantage of:
Showing me whether I had any Hotmail
Letting me straight into Hotmail by clicking on the envelope
'Pinging' me and showing a pop-up immediately somebody sent me an email while I was on the computer doing other things.
Because of irritating problems over the last week with Messenger, I decided today to go along the route they kept pestering me with, and merge Skype and Messenger. Now I have all my contacts transferred etc, but the facility with the Hotmail things doesn't seem to be there, so I have to keep checking the Hotmail instead of being alerted that there's a message.
Does anybody know of any solution to this? It's a bloody time-consuming pest.

I know they are shutting down messenger soon so maybe the function you used to have is no longer available
You might have to use an email client that downloads your emails for you (like outlook). Or there might be an add-on for the browser you're using, so that you get a popup when you get an email while you're using the internet.
I have had a quick search and found this:

Thanks both. Looks like I'll just have to be patient till they introduce it. Can't use Outlook as my website email is tied into that.
Ok a blog I write for on wordpress wants me to put a pic of my lovely, hairy fizzog up on it. And they suggest I do it via a Google plus account.
Set it up according to da instructions, but nothing happening.
Any hints?
Also my milks gone off, any way to reverse the aging process?
I know a little bit about Wordpress but never incorporated a Google plus account, but maybe it has something to do with the permissions most of my problems in the past with uploading stuff have usually been down to permissions.
Is it a Googleplus widget you are using?
I'm on Vodafone, right, and whenever I go to London I have real trouble getting 3G - I just get H or H+ whatever that is? Can this be right? Surely Vodafone can provide decent 3G in the capital?
