delete the adapter and reboot the computer to see if Windows reinstalls it.

Thanks, tried that, it reinstalled it OK, but it's still not connecting....I'm wondering if there's anything really obvious I'm missing now.

So does the network adapter in the device manager for the ethernet card have any exclamation marks or crosses next to it?

Then there may be a problem with the router, if you can connect another device to the router via ethernet and it connects that would rule that out.

Or the cable connected to the router is faulty, try another cable if you can

Or the network adapter on you computer has gone faulty

...I still can't get the ethernet working, but I can tether my phone to the USB port to get it online. However, updating drivers hasn't worked, in fact, there doesn't seem to be anything obviously wrong. It must be something verrrrry stupid I'm doing wrong...this fault developed a couple of days after I moved the pc, so maybe I've dislodged something (but then wouldn't I get an error message?)

The only thing I can think is that it is the cable that connects from the router to the ethernet port

the ethernet card has come loose, or is faulty, or is disabled in the bios.

Or maybe the network ports on the router have been disabled.

Is the network card now showing as fine in the device manager ?

You have tried all 4 LAN ports on the router, have you not?

Have you tried a replacement Ethernet cable yet, you might have stretched it in the move and broken one of the wires, it's a common fault.

Whenever I, or anyone else I've known has had this problem it has always been the simplest solution, something like a box needs to be ticked or a button needs to be pressed. It really is frustrating and I hope you find out what it is soon. I feel your pain.

Problems are usually related to the last action taken before the problem. In this case:
>..this fault developed a couple of days after I moved the pc,

Physical action... Most likely physical problem.

You should always keep a spare good ethernet cable on hand anyway as a diagnostic tool. They cost peanuts nowadays; you can get them in many places like Newsagents and Tescos as well as proper places like computer shops.

Anybody else getting BT WiFi options suddenly appearing in their network connections?

My daughter reckons they're putting their boxes everywhere atm to try to get people to sign up.

I have an old laptop that I want to sell but I want to wipe it of my personal data first. Can anyone advise me of the best way to remove my data but leave the OS in tact?

With the price you pay for anysort of operation like that is it worth it when you take into account how much you're likely to get for an old laptop?

Otherwise its a service most computer repair shops will do for about £100. I mean how much personal info is on there?

It's ok, I've found a programme that can do it.

Is it going to do it completely?

nb Bill Will if I remember rightly was wiping computers a couple of years ago. And he is the white bearded fount of all knowledge.

I'm deleting the user profile, files includedand then overwriting all the free disk space

What? Sooty, you need to make friends with a computer geek who would probably do it for you as a favour.

It makes me wonder if laptop repair shops suffer from cowboy style ripoff merchants. Charging ridiculous amounts to fix minor problems for a technophobe.
