My pc has decided it doesn't want to connect to the internet, for no apparent reason. I thought it might be Virgin's modem, but they say it isn't, and certainly the Wi-Fi works fine on other computers. The Virgin help people wanted to charge quite a bit to diagnose it, so I'll try it myself first. She did mention it might be a problem with the drivers, but how to fix that without being online? There weren't any updates I know of, and I've used system restore anyway. I've run virus checks, and cleaned the registry. What might I try next?

You could try this, it's worked for me before.

1. Unplug modem and router.
2. Plug modem back in, and let it finish booting up.
3. Plug router back in.
4. If still unavailable try the following link.
5. Use command prompt to type ipconfig/release
6. Type ipconfig/flushdns
7. Type ipconfig /renew

Not sure if it'll cure your problem, but it's come to my rescue a number of times (in the past).

No joy there Nils, it says "the requested operation requires evaluation"...?

Hmm never had that.

If the wifi works on the other computers then it is probably not the fault of the router, and it is on the computer.

Firts thing to do is to plug the problem computer directly into the router via the ethernet cable to see if that works.

If that does work then it is the wireless settings or the drivers on the computer.

Go into your device manager - Right click My computer - Properties - hardware - device manager.

Have a look in there for any exclamation marks or red crosses there should not be any in there at all.

If there is and it is next to the network controller, you will need to download the drivers from the internet, using another working computer.

Carlos, I've got crosses next to my network adapters, they're all variously numbered, 6to 4 adapters. clicking the general tab gives a device status messages of "Windows cannot load the drivers for this device.(code 31)". But the one listed as NVDIA n Force 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet is "working properly" and the pc is connected via the Ethernet cable.

You should only really have about 3 network adapters, one wireless, one wired and maybe a bluetooth one.

You could try right clicking the wireless one and choosing uninstall (you got nothing to loose) and then reboot the computer and see if windows picks it back up and installs it.

Failing that, you need the make and model of your computer and go to Google and type it in with drivers on the end, make sure you look for the drivers for your particular operating system.

If you download the drivers they are ussually executable files, run the .exe and that will install the drivers back in for you.

If you have any problems, let me know the make and model of your pc and the operating system.

So basically there is nothing wrong with your router, you should leave the settings as it is

...remember this pc is connected via ethernet cable, because it doesn't have wireless. There's about 40 of these 6 to 4 adapters!

So I rearranged all of my mobile, broadband bills etc and came out saving £50.

So do I get 4g from EE? Or do I wait till December?

Just how good is 4g?

You can delete all of them 6to4 adapters, you do not need them, and 40 is a lot. I don't think they are any harm but they are not needed and confuse things.

Delete them all, then on the wireless card cross right click and see if it allows you to enable the card, if not delete tuninstall the wireless card

Sooty I have heard that 4g is not as fast as they are saying, I don't own a smartphone so I wouldn't know, or be able to compare it to 4g but I think from what I have read on it, they are exagerating how fast it really is

No smart phone?

How do your friends on twitter know what you had for lunch?

You monster!

(Sootyj has a very nice brunch at a Turkish restaurant including Halloumi everythings better with halloumi)

Somehow my last but one reply ended up in my last reply as well, sorry

I have to do it the old fashioned way and wait till I come home from work to tell them, though sometimes I have to wait for my son to get bored of the computer, and by that time I forgot what I had for lunch

Perhaps you could carry a small note book and camera around with you in a rucksack?

I have often thought about doing that, but I keep forgeting to take them, I do carry a rucksack with my lunch in, and yesterday I had 3 ham salad rolls, without onions, a packet of flame grilled Mcoys and a can of Dr Pepper

It's the without onion line I find intriguing.

Is onion so traditional it's absence merits a mention?

I did not realise that but deep down somewhere it must have some sort of meaning for me to mention it, I think it is because I like onions but when I make my rolls in the morning I am to lazy to slice them up but then when I eat my rolls I know it is missing onions, and I wish I took the time to put them in.

I think I must have onion envy or something like that

Nogget sorry I just realised what you meant, so the pc is ussually connected via ethernet because it has no wireless. But it is not connecting via the ethernet cable.

Sort of same applies, right click the ethernet adapter and see if allows you to enable it, if not delete the adapter and reboot the computer to see if Windows reinstalls it.

If that fails there is a chance that the drivers might be on your computer in the C: drive if they are not there then you will have to use another computer to download them

Here is my question, how come my last but one reply is included in my last reply, is it a bug with the forum or is it something on my end
