Well hello there.
Firstly, I apologise in advance because this is going to be an absolute mouthful.
My name is Joe, I'm 26 and I have realised that getting involved with, being surrounded by and producing comedy is all I really want to do.
Born and raised in the UK, I dazed through college with stable but unimpressive results and did not attend university. I do have a minor qualification in Print Journalism, though.
I have bumbled around doing run-of-the-mill jobs like working in a jewellery store and also a few roles in a large office; all of which have provided the same dizzying levels of fulfillment as a cold and forlorn sausage roll from Greggs.
Until recently, I had no passion when it came to my 'career'. I never wanted to be a doctor, dentist, vet, soldier or anything like that; however I now realise that the only time I'm ever really happy or satisfied is when I'm making people laugh.
I fully understand that pursuing a career in comedy performance or writing is probably even more difficult than anything regular like being a doctor (etc) because of the limitations with opportunities, the competition for aforementioned opportunities and the fact that you can work your backside off on a piece and people still might not like it.
Skipping rungs of the ladder is not my aim (even if that were possible) and I know I'm not going to get anywhere by sitting on my rear, staring at a laptop screen.
This thread is to try and understand more about how 'the industry' works and how I can get started. I'm currently looking for open mic nights to attend in my area (South West but willing to travel) and I'm going to try my hand at writing short pieces of script to try and up my experience one line at a time.
This isn't a whimsical five-minute crisis following a 'Blue Monday' at work, this is something I want to put my life into. I want this to 'work out' so, so much.
Any advice or discussion would be appreciated greatly.
Many thanks for your time and for reading.
Joe.
