Yes, but you always had two or three good titles in the top ten.

Make that Top 40, and you might be in with a shout.
Even then, I'm not so sure.

I think Jonathan King produced the first Genesis album.

I think he was mostly in a management role in their very early days, I might be wrong though.

I think in those days it was easier to find the good stuff. The cool guys went to a Who concert...today the cool guys go to a rave (whatever that means) with DJ's with names like "DJ Deluxe" or "DJ Kick Me In The Nuts". Another problem is the overflow of acts today. Even with internet it is harder to find or read something about acts you'd probably like.

It's not that clear anymore what is "cool" and what is not. It's not unhip today to watch these Idol shows, sadly.

"This the first album by Genesis, released in March 1969 on Decca Records in England (London Records in North America). It was produced by Jonathan King, who discovered them in 1967 while the members of Genesis were pupils at Charterhouse School, King's alma mater."

Can't imagine what he was doing hanging round a boy's school...

He was an ex pupil I think and wanted to give something back to society. I read a Genesis biography many many years ago.
But he destroyed the album by adding cheesy strings to the songs.

Always did.
Just check the charts out in those 'golden years'!

Not too bad actually.

I do think there is more of disjunction between the charts and real music now than in the past.

But in terms of diversity and quality of music actually being produced we are in something of a golden age. The digital age has opened up new commercial opportunities and allowed unprecedented artistic freedom. You just have to seek the music out a bit more now, as the main media outlets seemed determined to thrust pap down the gullets of the unthinking masses.

I must admit I'm a bit lazy to search the internet in general or YouTube for the "new cool thing" so I tend to rely on my CD collection.
Same with comedy. I don't want to search 5584469909 podcasts, YouTube clips and smelly stand up venues to discover small onces of comedy gold. That's my problem.

This is what I meant. You have engelbert and some other cheesy stuff, but you have also Traffic and Kinks as well in the top ten.

I am not the biggest pop fan in the world but I can enjoy the odd commercial pop tune! Its the same with movies. I like well written, acted, directed, etc. But I also enjoy some very expensive cheese or some cheap as chips type films.

I watch X-Factor and The Voice. Its a guilty pleasure for sure. I HATE so much about the show I could bore you. But one thing is for sure: Its a very well made piece of crap.

Many will have tuned in and then tuned out years ago, making their mind up about these types of shows. But these shows are evolving. The last two years have seen some genuine talent emerge on both sides of the pond. Yes its a glorified karaoke of sorts, but recently talented songwriters and musicians who can sing have started to surface.

Of course these all round talents rarely win but the exposure is priceless and many are now going on to have better careers than the winners.

Even if there is some talent it gets wasted with what you rightfully called Karaoke. And I respect your decision to enjoy these shows as a guilty pleasure. And you said yourself "I am not the biggest pop fan", so that makes perfect sense.

But is has also to be understood that a musical "hardliner" as me is a bit pissed off by these shows. especially as the candidates soil the charts with with their karaoke cover versions. And the audience isn't even consistent. They vote for their "hero": "Oh, heeee's great, he cried on stage, he deserves to be the biggest popstar on earth". but after year or so they stop buying his records and prepare for the new series. this whole thing is too artificial/superficial.

Maybe I could live with it if the producers would be more honest by not calling it "X Got Talent" but "X GOT A Guilty Pleasure To Exploit For The Next Six Month".

(I'm beginning to think that starting this thread was a good idea :) )

Don't we all like at least one cover over an original version?

I would say that when it comes to "the charts", other non-reality shows singers are doing far more soiling :)

Yes it is. But does that really mean the process cannot unearth some genuine talent?

The Judges and mentors are becoming more honest in some regards. They are moving towards trying to find someone who can be more than a flavour of the month. Yes they still try to manufacture pop acts for the tweens, but it seems to an extent, that the audience are trying to tell them (the producers) that they want more than a novelty.

What I don't get is the people who hate these types of shows to the extent that they think voting for the joke act is a big f**k-you to the programme makers. They don't see the irony of making these acts popular.

I do, if it is well done & inspired.

Why does this great talent not take the "normal route" and prefers to sing cover versions of Sting or R.Kelly songs?

I don't do that. This is really stupid especially if one claims not to watch such a programme.

I doubt it is the people who hate the show who vote for the joke acts.

What is the normal route in this day and age? I know shit loads of musicians who are great at what they do. Many want artistic integrity and all want some degree of success. They travel and play for shit money and struggle to make a living. They have talent for sure but the business is about so much more than that.

Listen to these with your eyes shut and tell me you don't hear a shift in direction for these shows (skip the crap before the song if you don't want to feel nauseous):

Lucy Spraggan - Last Night (Original tune written by Lucy Spraggan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i3qeErUaFo

Ella Henderson - Goodbye (Original tune written by Ella Henderson) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k9cK_n1mlg

Robbie Hance - Coconut Skins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3ysT2bvwKg

Jahmene Douglas - At Last http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-xndZZjM4A

James Arthur - No More Drama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhNOZ8O9BGE

Ella Henderson - Believe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTbcO9qaE5g

Thanks for these samples. The whole show is still a charade (and I can't stand Gary Barlows grinning face. Why does he do that jury thing? He has an intact music career). I'm maybe unfair...but candidates or ex-candites have certain stigma to them (for me). Even if they are really talented or/and have good musical tastes. But participating in such a show is like making a porn movie when you're younger: You cannot become prime minister...or Bishop Of canterbury, no matter how intelligent or holy you are.
