British Comedy Guide

The general pop/rock - music thread

Since I'm a rock/pop music fan as well as I am a comedy fan I think there should be a place (or thread) where I and other "believers in good music" can discuss musical matters.
Sometimes when someone mentions a classic rock song that's played in the background of a sitcom I get carried away and go off topic. This thread is a possible way of avoiding people going astray thematically.

I don't want to imposte my music taste on someone so this is a place where people can poste about old John Lee Hooker LP's as well as the latest Lady Ga Ga download tracks. We can discuss the latest release of an artist, new editions of older CD's, remastering, bonus tracks, cover artwork or even gossip. Anything about good ol' music.

Only one restriction: Please, keep this thread casting show free.

(Presumably that means reality show?)

(We call these sick shows 'casting shows' over here in the german speaking world: a jury of wannabe music specialists humiliating a bunch wannabe musicians/stars. That wouldn't be such a problem if these morons wouldn't ruin cool pop classics with their uninspired karaoke cover versions. Britain's got Talent and things like that)

(Hee. Is depressing to know they have infected every country on the planet. Anyway, mustn't talk about them! *zips lips*)

Good idea, it will stop being getting narky on other threads

Inspired by the Stones/Tickets thread I'm asking you which is your favourite Stones album for the desert island? Why and which songs make this your favourite.

I'd choose "Beggar's Banquet", "Sticky Fingers" and "Some Girls" (+ its little twin brother "Emotional Rescue"). All three (or four) albums are pure...they don't play around, they're just raw and ugly blues rock with a little dose of folk. Beggar is a bit more folky and quiet while the others rock hard and straight. "Sticky Fingers" is my least favourite of those but it has the ultimate (imo) rock song on it: "Brown Sugar". This song has everything. The best intro ever, swagger and a catchy refrain.

It has to be Let it Bleed, the intro to monkey man just being mind expandingly wonderful. But it is run a close second by Exile on Mainstreet, let it loose etc, a masterpiece.

And it has the wonderful and mysterious "Gimme Shelter" on it if I remember right.

So this doesn't turn into an old man circle jerk, with crusty out of touch mutha fudgers going on about Steppenwolf and the Isle of Wight Festival and prog friggin' rock, here be something a bit more modern.

Willy Moon - Yeah, Yeah - caught his performance last night on Jools Holland and thought he was excellent.

*shit, just found out it's being used in the latest Apple iPod advert, so it's no longer cool*

Also I have a fondness for the album steel wheels, when it came out I was in Paris and saw them live, I think that was the last Bill Wyman tour. Richards singing ' slipping away' is a joy. There is a duet by Keith Richards and Tom Waits on the album 'Rain Dogs' called 'That Feel', a muscical competition to see who sounded the most addled

And it has some great singles. The album is very uneven but you can't whack Mixed emotions and Rock & A Hard Place. And yes, I liked Slipping Away too...I always like the Richards sung songs on the Stones albums.

This could be another thread: YOUR FAVOURITE RICHARDS SONG: mine would be "Before They Make Me Run"

His solo albums are a shambles though, mind you better than Jagger's.

I'm too late, the elderly jism is flying around like a Dad's Army bukkake.

Would love to impose a rule that no one can talk about 'classic' pop / rock without naming at least one new song they liked in the last four years.

:(

I'm not sure I could

Jagger's are mostly shit. With the exception of "Wandering Spirit" which has many Stones-worthy songs on it. They would have bettered the Bridges To Babylon album, which was overproduced imo.
