If have noticed that you go on a bit !
It sounds silly but all of this could just be a Matrix-like construct. With the advent of quantum computers it's not only possible but some say highly likely that this existence, you, me, the world around us, is simply part of a program or even a game on a sophisticated computer, not too far into the future.
All this could very well be The SIMS 2012 - End Of The World Edition being played on some kid's Playstation 8, just a couple of decades from now. Let's hope he doesn't scratch the disk.
PS: If you think it sounds mental(and I agree it does), don't take my word for it, a NASA scientist has been pondering it too. http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/31186/is-all-of-human-existence-just-a-giant-video-game-from-the-future
Red Dwarf has so been there done that.

Yeah sort of, but they were playing the game themselves, not just made-up characters. There's a scarily convincing argument involving quantum particles. Basically, scientists have shown that quantum particles don't actually exist in the physical world until we observe them. In computer games it's the same. the game "draws" the things you're looking at as you look at them. Anything in the periphery or blind part is ignored, until you choose to look at it and the computer makes it for you.
Spooooooooooky.
