Dead Parrot, I mean Poets Society...

Here's one way to lure back our favourite curly haired Scatter-tat-tat to more regular posting...

This week, I shall mostly be learning about poetry until the thread falls off the page and we all forget about and move on with our lives.

Share, create and discuss.

Literally the first poem I stumbled across and now like, and understand thanks to some analytical breakdown.

The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I'm game.
Doing some research into war poetry I found this recently.

'The Loving Game' by Vernon Scannell

A quarter of a century ago
I hung the gloves up, knew I'd had enough
Of taking it and trying to dish it out,
Foxing them or slugging it toe-to-toe;
Keen youngster made the going a bit too rough;
The time had come to have my final bout.

I didn't run to fat though, kept in shape,
And seriously took up the loving game,
Grew moony, sighed, and even tried to sing,
Looked pretty snappy in my forty-drape.
I lost more than I won, earned little fame,
Was hurt much worse than in the other ring.

I remember studying this at school, and thinking, I still kinda want a kissogram.

Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.

Lethal.

I heard this first on Four Weddings and a Funeral and it made me cry.

W. H. Auden - Stop all the Clocks

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Lee's poem reminded me of this by TS Eliot from the first quartet:

Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden.

And this is one of my all-time favourite poems:

The Poet by George Mackay Brown

Therefore he no more troubled the pool of silence.
But put on mask and cloak,
Strung a guitar
And moved among the folk.
Dancing they cried,
'Ah, how our sober islands
Are gay again, since this blind lyrical tramp
Invaded the Fair!'

Under the last dead lamp
When all the dancers and masks had gone inside
His cold stare
Returned to its true task, interrogation of silence.

That is a bastarding good poem *sob*

I've always liked this Stevie Smith one, cos I'm a cheery bugger

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning

That actually reminds me of the time, years ago in Spain when we saw, from the rooftop of our hotel, a man drowning, not too far out in the sea. It was utterly weird - all over so quickly. One minute he was waving and in no time they were taking his body away. Chilling.

Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade

One of my favourite poems of all time.

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,

I studied this one at school and have always had a fondness for it's humour and social snapshot.

Telephone Conversation by Wole Soyinka

The price seemed reasonable, location

"I hate a wasted journey-I am African."
Silence. Silenced transmission of

I also like some of Bukowski's poetry. It's got a real world weary grit that I can't get enough of:

I like this, it reminds me of my Dad, especially as he was approaching the end of his life.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they

I love that poem.

I was reminded of The Raven recently, such a good poem but a bit long to paste so here's a link :)
