Boris Johnson the New Messiah of British Politics

A little slow tonight. Struggling with render times. Enjoy

I think these are very well edited and a great idea.

Although I'm not completely sure what it is that you are going for. If you want them to be funnier (and I think they have the potential to be very funny), then I think they need to go in one of two directions - closer to the source or further away. You could take, verbatim or near as possible, the politicians speeches and juxtoppose them with ironic images (I can't come up with a good example at the moment, so I'll have to make one up...say, if Osborne had said "We believe young people should pay their way" accompanied by images of Harry Secombe singing "Boy For Sale").

OR you play around with it completely to create something totally unreal, a la the news footage montages between sketches in Not The Nine O'Clock News. (real news footage of Margaret Thatcher reading a magazine on the plane, then cutting to a close up of a soft porn magazine to create the effect that this is what she is reading).

Of course, this is all my humble opinion, and what I would do if I had been clever enough to come up with the idea. That may not be what you are looking for.

Cheers Joe

I'll take anything on board. Its largely experimentation. I do try and Juxtapose two simple ideas but you never know the out come until you start editing and moving stuff around.. DA DA.
I'm aware that they work best kept short and sometimes I get carried away.. Tonights offering is uploading now.. A Titanic of a Movie! The trailers seem to work best..

I really had fun editing this one and probably the only one that has really worked this week. Had some technical difficulties with Boris and just ran out of time.

Thanks for feedback, Cameron the Movie should be up in an hour

Interesting idea, but one of the problems here is that Boris' speech was funnier than what you did with it. All that stuff about mops, brooms and Jay cloths wasn't enhanced at all by dubbing on the crowd noise. Perhaps instead of employing your current working method of editing and seeing what happens, you should try to write it first.

I bet Christmas Charards are a barrel of laughs at your house. And bed time fun?

"Wait for it wait for it Mrs Nogget, knickers down, I'm getting inspiration, pass the postal note.."

The whole point of this stuff is you work fast and in edit. Not a paper script in site. It goes on instinct an afternoon's Mash-up usually two simple ideas and see where it takes you some are better than others. Its sketching not writing (God knows we do enough of that)

Not quite sure why Noggett deserved quite that level of rudeness, but there you go.

You could greatly reduce your rendering times by making your pieces a lot shorter - they would certainly benefit from judicial editing.

The idea of jamming together Boris and the Messiah is perfectly well executed in the 30 second starting at roughly 2mins7 secs
The rest is weak padding - detracting from the piece.

I think it's easy to take criticism (constuctive or otherwise) badly, it's also easy to sound a bit harsh when giving it, especially on the internet.

I did Film Studies at university, and have had to do my fair share of editing arty shorts together. What you have done seems to be a slighty more subtle arty statement compared to what most of us ge tup to. Which is fine, nothing wrong with that.

But I think that the assumption has been that if you have posted in the critique section of a comedy forum, then you are asking for opinions on how ot make it better, particularly with a view to making it more funny.

I think both Nogget and I were trying to give you a push in that direction.

I thought I was replying with humour.. but hey ho

Of course I get what your saying Lazzard, sometimes the original simply is funnier I agree. Parts of David Cameron's speech yesterday were hilarious without my help and most of the really funny things that happen are in the every day and in the moment, I get that.

And actually your correct anything above 2 minutes doesn't do as well. The Clegg Ultimatum video at 1:43 did the best at around 5000 hits. So I except the Boris vid probably would have done better without the centre section of Brian doing the "You've got to think for yourselves" line. That was purely my political predudice winning over my comic instinct.. But hey it made me laugh and I'm doing this stuff largely for myself and experiment..

But yes I'll try and keep them short from now on..To much indulgence in Wiffle Waffle..

PS the render time makes no difference to the final Edit. Its the original source that has to be sinked and rendered. 2 or 4 minutes make little difference to that..Time to get rid of Final Cut Pro 7.

Well, it takes all sorts. Not my taste but who am I...

You're the person taking time out to act nonchalant about a matter you profess to have no interest in? One could ask why bother, but why bother.

The gist of my post is: What is the purpose of bashing out stuff as fast as you can, the less time the better with a scripted idea being the antichrist?
If the rule is: "Don't post comments on things you don't like or you're not interested in" then Aaron should grey me out.

Just seems a bit strange to me, still whatever flicks your switch I suppose.

Fair enough, although I would have thought the point would be to make it work the way you want it.

That's how I took it. I'd like to know how you found out about the postal notes though.

...or to be funny (I'm not saying that this example isn't). But this whole "arty" approach to comedy puzzles me a bit. If a painter says: "Bashing out my pictures as fast as I can and see what happens is my concept" then that's ok with me. Art, in a neutral sense, can be beautiful, shocking, bleak, preachy or whatever. Or everything at the same time. But this is comedy after all...and the fun factor should be the most important (imo). But that doesn't seem to be top priority with this approach...so, what's the point, or as Teddy would put it: "why bother".
I'm don't want to insult you PA I'm just trying to understand. That's why I bother, Teddy.
