Ben Elton Page 5

My main memory of him from the olden days (early 90s) was him doing a bit about periods in his set which was actually very accurate. Which I thought was quite cool.

Never really got the hate thing with Ben Elton. It seems to be something about him being a rebel when he was younger, and then daring to mellow with age. We all slow down. I'm wearing slippers now.

From what I've read, I think it's less to do with 'rebel gone soft' and more that people think his act in the 80s was basically a lie. That they thought he stood for something, but his actions since suggest it was more that he found a successful angle to exploit, one that struck a nerve and made him a star, rather than ever really meaning it.

I recall, on Friday or Saturday Live, someone shouted out, while he was introducing the start of that week's show. 'We don't want any hecklers round here!' he goes, quick as lightning. 'You just sit back in your chair, we'll plug it in later!' Big laugh from the audience: how quick-witted and witty, I think.

Years later, I read that that was actually a Jasper Carrot heckler put down...

Ouch, that bit was used in a docu as an example of how quick he was! Shame.

Are you unwell?

Feeling much better now I've got rid of some bile.

I may have said this on another forum, but does any one remember The Man From Auntie?

He made jokes about getting embarrassing erections as a teenager, he kept calling his a "fun size Mars Bar".

The only time I felt sympathy for the "little" shite hawk.
