Having given this some thought, Life can be empty, I think Michael Caine is a greatly sinned to actor. 'The Italian Job' with Mark Windbag and 'Alfie' with Jude the Obscure are travesties that should never have got past the first production meeting. Pity poor Michael, until, that is you consider his own remake of Sleuth, total rubbish done as a vanity project so that he could play the Olivier role.

The 80s version of "The Fly" was so different from the original that I wouldn't even call it a remake.

Bloody hell. I'd forgotten about the Italian Job remake.
I recently watched the remake of 'I Spit On Your Grave'. I believe they have done a brilliant job of updating and indeed enhancing it. I still love the original so can watch both in isolation without fear of unfavourable comparison. If you love 'revenge' movies with a soupçon of gore I can thoroughly recommend both versions.

There was a good remake of Get Carter (well, maybe not good, but I like it) called 'Hitman'. A blaxploitation version made about a year after the original Get Carter starring Bernie Casey and Pam Grier.

Rather than Carter locking a woman in the boot of a car, only for the car to be pushed into Tyne drowning the woman, in Hitman, Tyrone Taggart (Carter) drives her to a safari park, and leaves her to be eaten by Lions!

Not really a fan of the original. But to give it some comedy connection (this being the British Comedy Guide and all), Camille Keaton who stars in the film is the granddaughter of Buster Keaton. Wierd!
Talking of remakes, as much as I agree that in general most of them don't deliver, I'd love to see Jackie Chan have a go at remaking Buster Keaton's 'The General'. He loves Keaton and I think he is the only man that could do it justice (although perhaps he is a little too old now).
The new version of "The Last House On the Left" was a lot mor professionally done than the 70s original (which was a looooooooow budget effort) and more brutal to a certain extent. But it lacked the humour and the thrashy low key charm of the original.
Ben Hur and The Wizard Of Oz were both remakes, so this is hardly a new phenomenom.
And remakes exist because Hollywood is an industry and they know for a fact that if they remake such and such a film they'll get guaranteed box office returns and DVD/Blu Ray revenues. They'll also be able to repackage and resell the original. It's just capitalism, pure and simple.
