As Sooty mentions, the Tardis translation thingy. You travel in the Tardis, it messes with your brain to allow you translate. It's a short cut built into the series. Lack of WHo knowledge fail, RC!

Trying to deflect the argument will get you nowhere, especially as an unknown ship was heading to Earth in SG-1 and instead of comedy robots and dinosaurs, it carried the Replicators and the show made sense.

He picks up assistants because of an emotional need; to buy into this you need to buy into the characters. The 'there's a backstory but we can't be arse to tell you about it' approach just does not wash. And if he had new assistants why did he need Amy and Rory?

Plus the explorer guy was, in his mind, a sort of 'current' companion, as he had evidently left part way through some sort of adventure with him, and now returned. So he would be 'current' to the Doctor, and he would see this latest adventure and decide to go pick him up again.

The doctor Has always picked up people who travel with him and eventually drop off..
I think Barnard Cribins was one of the first in the Dalek Movie.
But this was awful writing, with little or no explanation where these people came from or why..
A dreadful turn for the worst if we are going to have this happen every week..
THey used to stay on the Tardis, and they met the doctor during the course of a Story or plot line.

It's also to try and get across that the Doctor is now constantly off having long stretches of times, and lots of adventures, without the Ponds. So you get snapshots of that to get across that time is passing and he's off doing what he always does, then popping back.
I like the idea he has a bunch of different companions he calls at random for special jobs. And when he isn't with Ponds he's adventuring with someone else.

No, there was nothing written on the ammo blocks or any distinguishing features whatsover. And why would a big game hunter care about using tranquilisers against dinosaurs?...that is if the magic Tardis translation effect worked on him as well.

In rigid old fashioned episodes that really weren't that good. And assistants used to be boring plot scafolding. Sara Jane asks questions, Jamie hits people, Adric does sums. Empty dreary cyphers.
