Ray Winstone seems an obvious choice to play Regan, I did like The Sweeney what I can recall of it.
The Sweeney Page 2
It's all coming flooding back now.
The following line was in all the adverts for the film in the 1970s.
"If those guys are special branch it's the police who are trying to kill us."
A lot bigger case than usual but that's what they did in films. A bit more OTT.
The blonde bloke in The Sweeney film version also starred as Van Der Valk, I think.
Being a fan of The Sweeney, I am looking forward to the new movie, with Ray Winstone. I haven't seen The Sweeney movies from the seventies, they are on my, must watch, list.

As you've seen the originals, don't hold your breath over the new movie . . .

Yes, you are probably correct, Oldrocker. It is a hard act to follow.
Ray Winstone is always a good watch, even if the movie itself is a stinker.
Quote: Ignatius Rake @ August 10 2012, 6:05 PM BSTTotal vomit. Yet another bollocks remake. Still, not as bad as the Wicker Man remake.
Nothing could be as dreadful and pointless as The Wicker Man remake. Did you see where someone made a comedy trailer for it? Good stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_mW8mBzmHo
No sign of The Sweeney in Asian cinemas yet. Ray Winstone was superb as the dimwitted dodgy mechanic Arnie in Minder, though not quite as good as the previous dodgy mechanic, Des.

I'd have thought this too. Accent and villain image apart, I don't think there's many others with the big star presence needed. Have I missed this this, I was hoping to go and see it.

Yeah heard it was either him or Rupert Everett. Close call apparently - until RW kicked f**k out of him on his doorstep during an early morning visit.
Its gonna be a predictable hackneyed cockney police/gangster offering with lots of tit oggling, whisky drinking escapades and the equivalent of today's Ford Granadas screeching round sahf Lahndan - along with banter such as 'Do wot my saan? You are fah**n' nicked!'
All in all..can't fah**n wait!

The point about John Thaw was that he was most decidedly not the obvious choice to play a thuggish copper, which gave the character another dimension. Not saying that Winstone has no acting chops, but thug is very much the starting point. And that oversimplifies Jack Regan.
Both Sweeney films were on the goggle box last night, great stuff...

He was yes - but was a Yank this time.
