Graham Linehan tells it how it is

Just read this and thought I'd share. It's very, very true. Basically, leave your ego at the door, listen to what others have to say, trust your instincts as to who's right and wrong and your stuff will be all the better for it.
Writing is like any other job. You don't go into it an expert. You learn from others and get better. And you keep learning and hopefully keep getting better.

Ah balls, just read what Graham says, he's better than me.

Even though I'm not writing any more, that makes me want to buy the IT Crowd series 4 DVD, just for the commentary.

Like.

Oh dear.

Judging by his twitter account he'll be furious that you've only said he is better than one person.

As for the article, well...yes...rewrites are important.

Yes it is a bit, "we kinda knew that already or we are twats and won't be listening anyway"

My advice to Graham Linehan would be don't get a group of new up & coming writers together to write your sitcom for you & then decide that you don't want to bother anyway.

Yes. Stick that in your pipe!

Producers do sometimes bring the wrong people in as script-editors, though. Sometimes they bring in people who are simply successful writers in their own right. Who will be able to identify genuine weaknesses and make great suggestions, but may lack what I think is another essential quality in the job - diplomatic skills.

If you are script-editing a show written by one or two people, it's very important to get on with them. It's your job to win the trust of the writer as well as the producer. I reckon.

Mmm. I once had notes back from a script editor at an Indie that ranged from "Not funny" to "F**k off!". I was quite relieved that particular project didn't go anywhere, he was a complete knob. I found out he was sacked a few months later. Hah.

I suspect he now works for ATOS.

I feel you are absolutely within your rights to consider such a person an A-grade bellend. My sympathies.

Sounds like he was treating you like shit because he wanted to feel like a big man.

Or maybe it really was crap and he thought he was taking the piss.

No he thought he was being matey and funny. He was neither.

There's also that possibility.

I wonder if GL would have felt like this when he was more involved in the writing process?

The worse bit is when he stated that if you need to explain a joke to somebody, you've already lost. I couldn't disagree with this more.

More involved? He's still involved, he's a writer.
