General thread about argument.

Aaron. Please delete this thread if you so wish, after you've read what I'd like to say.

Concerning argument: there is a repeating line in "I, Claudius" that sums up my feelings on the matter: "Let all the poisons that lurk in the mud, hatch out."

I think it's far healthier to let things out into the open, than cap them with a poultice, under which, things fester. If we don't bring such stuff out into the open and argue, we'll never lance that boil.

That's it. I've said my piece.

Is this the 5 minute thread or the 10 minute thread...?

Thread closed.

I generally agree. You may note that we as rare as never close, delete, or otherwise modify threads or posts here. But there's a difference between a healthy debate and the virtual-fistfight tone toward the end of the Citizen Khan thread.

It's far less healthy to allow an argument - rather than a debate - to start going around in ludicrous circles with people (not you) wilfully misrepresenting the other side for their own ends, than it is to not allow that argument in the first place.

We've had enough misplaced ill-feeling around here in the past, and I don't want any further to foster.

Who'd have thought that Citizen Khan would start such controversies?!? :O

Yes.. but "greying-out" the posts in question? I mean, they're still legible. I just don't see the point of that. Things just fester.

It's the internet. It was inevitable, sooner or later. I'm just surprised that Hitler hasn't been mentioned yet.

That's because we'd gone off-topic. We were no longer discussing the merits of Citizen Khan specifically, but of the health of British society with regard to ethnic minorities. Clearly a related topic, but not the same one.

But it's still legible. I just don't get that strategy.

They have been marked as off-topic (and greyed out) because they're not of interest to the main discussion, not because they contain an argument that I'm trying to shield people from.

Okay.. I'll agree to disagree on that one.

OK, I'll clarify: of interest, but only related to. It was not the headline topic of discussion - i.e. Citizen Khan itself. The comedy forums are for discussing comedies; we were no longer doing so. If you want to start up a new thread in General Discussion to debate ethnic integration and social cohesion, please go ahead.

I haven't got the time: I'm going out for a curry.

I did that, but you closed that one as well ;)

This thread should have been called The Wrath of Khan.

It's a shame Ghandi's Revenge doesn't work here... :P
