Online bullying Page 2

I was using "Fraping" as a general term for Facebook abuse.

I think it's pretty safe to say that those of us who left school before the internet really got going have NO idea what internet bullying can be like.

(When I was 16 hardly anyone had the internet, and seemingly about a year later everyone did.)

Exactly.

Fraping is bullying?

I had to look up "fraping": The act of changing the details on someone's Facebook page when they leave it open and vulnerable.

Yes, well, that's why computers have 'sleep' and password protection. Mate of mine at the pub the other night left his laptop on the table when he went for a slash, and another geezer changes his Facebook status to "I'm gay". My goodness - what a terrible calumny, how ever will he cope? If people genuinely live in fear of being fraped then they can simply delete their Facebook account and stop wasting time online. And read books and have sex. Easy.

Yes...my daughters' friends have a terrible time when they fall out with each other. There is usually a mass gang-up on individuals. Nasty pictures posted. Everything they put as a status is ridiculed. Even if they block everyone, they get through somehow and there's always their phones. Luckily, my daughters aren't involved in any of that. I think their brother abuses them more than anyone else...but only in a brotherly way. Oh dear, that sounds even worse! I mean on the internet...in public messages! I think I'd better shut up now.

But, yes, it wasn't around like this for us. I first started using chat rooms for quizes just over ten years ago. I ran a bot on Dalnet and, even then, the adults were falling over themselves to take top dog status within the quizroom. But they never could, BECAUSE I DID!!

I had an online stalker. Not nice at all.

Your fault for living by the railway line

Sorry couldn't resist

Sounds awful

Laughing out loud

Yes it was awful.

Buckinghamshire had the internet in 1987?!

Eh?

Just cos you're turning 30, doesn't make everyone else 40.

I think it's pretty safe to say unless you've been repeatedly punched and kicked in the face and had your money / trainers / phone, etc. taken off you by a gang of vicious kids on an almost daily basis, you really don't know what bullying is.

Some teenage girl calling you a 'lying slag' or whatever on Facebook is pretty minor in comparison.

Ah, it's a competition? I didn't realise.

Plus it sounds like 'raping' and it gives your argument more gravitas. Why not just call it Online Bully-cide or Digital Word-Murder or a dozen other The Day Today style euphamisms?

;)

I pretty clearly said 'internet bullying', what you're talking about is physical bullying and a totally different subject. Which no one was even comparing except you.

Not so much a competition but degrees of severity. Concentrating resources on online bullying instead of real life bullying seems a waste of time and money. Get rid of real life bullying and the online bullying will disappear. The converse will not be true.
