Online bullying

Something that has come into the media in Aus recently is bullying on social media.
The debate is mostly around what is acceptable to say to/about someone and what is going to far?
The other part of it is should the bullies be named and shamed?

I think it's ok to say that you don't like a particular song/show but I don't really see the need to tweet or facebook the artist just to say that. I think that you can disagree with a article, as long as you can say why. Suggesting someone should harm themselves or whishing they get hurt is not acceptable.

As far as naming and shaming the bullies I'm not this is the answer. It could result in them been bullied. Seems to me that we don't punish someone who beat up another by arranging a beating for them. So would inciting bullying against a bully be right?

You could fine them or ban them from the interenet. I imagine there are ways around this though, unless you are been watched constantly.

I've been on Facebook for just over a year now and I've yet to see any online bullying.

This is the usual media fear mongering, taking a relatively obscure story and blowing it out of all proportion. The audiences for these programmes are too ignorant to make an informed decision, so are quite happy to believe that online bullying is a 'major problem'.

Oh what am I talking about - let's all panic and ban things - it's what we do best and the only real solution to any given problem.

I haven't seen it on Facebook but maybe it happens more with teenagers?

Give us your lunch smelly bum or I'll give you a dead arm!

Have you been involved in an online bullying campaign as either the victim or ring leader? Have you harrassed someone into killing themselves? Do you even know someone who has been the victim of online social media bullying?

There was a similar 'ZOMG! The Internetz is evils!' story a couple of years back about people meeting online to carry out suicide pacts. The way the pundits were talking, it was more popular then eBay. Again, tiny story, massive overreaction.

Well, the little f**kers ruined the Internet for everyone else, so let 'em die.

How many times do I have to tell you, I don't want anymore dead arms. You know the bit of the corpse I want. Bring me that, then you'll get the lunch money.

You always take the most extreme example. But millions of people use Facebook and others like it every day, every god-damned minute of every god-damned day. People are getting FRAPED left right and centre. You only ever look at the bigger picture but people, hundreds and millions of people live inside that picture and live life everyday going through this shit. And anyone that disagrees with you is a left-wing liberal. My God R.C grow some opinions of your own, we all know you're a decent fella in the real life and this bullshit you spout has no real application to the real world. You don't solve problems, you just highlight the worst bits of life and without real comic effect.

You're like a snow day where we hope school gets cancelled but it never does.

Hundreds and millions? See my earlier statement about overreaction.

But, I don't want to get in the way of people stating in the most obvious manner possible that 'bullying is wrong m'kay' - because it's that kind of insightful revelation that BCGers do best.

Perhaps I could even muster up some mock sympathy for a dead teenager I don't know or care about, so it looks like I have a heart - no matter how hypocritical / crowd pleasing that may seem.

Not sure what that has to do with online bullying..?

How about not mustering any mock sympathy for a dead teenager you don't know or care about, just keeping quiet about the dead teenager?

This is precisely the sort of creepy and callous online bullying that is tearing apart the social fabric of Australian society. Mean, spiteful, petty vindictive name-calling is rather spineless. The obvious solution is for everyone to wise up and realise that life is too short for engaging in childish online oneupmanship, even if folk do have their heads up their arses about stuff like Doctor Who and smoking.

Fraping is bullying?

It is usually friends and siblings who do the fraping, it's just a prank really.
