I came across this story El James who has made money self publishing.
I have a few friends who have tried this (mainly factual History) with various degrees of success, And I manage a trickle feed of DVD's via Amazon.
But I was wondering if anyone has tried avoiding the mainstream broadcasters and publishing comedy via the internet?

I'm not sure anybody actively tries to avoid the mainstream broadcasters, more that they can't get anywhere with them, for whatever reason.

What I was interested in was whether anyone has tried creating comedy in the same way writers are self publishing..
A million down loads at 50p adds up..
Why should comedy be any different from a book read.. even better
lots of people lying on beeches relaxing who prefer to listen than read?
And lets face it you could go much nearer the mark without BBC censors and off com crawling all over your back

Well someones making alot of money (And not paying tax) with Stand up comedy DVD's
Why should it be any more difficult to release it as SOUND based
That way your sitcom or Sketch show could work like old fashion radio but without Off com boundaries
You down load comedy sketches.. Could work as Inte4rnet Sketch shows..

The simple fact is, unless someone is established, it's hard to imagine anyone paying money (however little) to hear their stand-up. That goes double when there's already so much comedy being given away for free by way of podcasts

Yeah I get that.
But the article I linked at beginning shows that writers are making money by self publishing. Of course for every one making a million theres probably a thousand bumping along the bottom. But there are sites you can go to put your book up, promote it, and that site takes a percentage.
I just wondered if anyone has tried it in comedy?
I guess Stand-ups have more interest in promoting and giving for free, as they can make money from Live Shows.. But a writer doesn't have that option. So recording material (pretty easy on most edit systems Audacity is a free download although I use FCP) but recording material building an audience, perhaps starting for free and selling installments..
Just wondered if such sites existed?
I can't see that Books should be different from comedy really? Though I'm sure people have tried. I was hoping to get some feedback..

And it's not just comedy. Art, music, writing, film... er pretty much anything creative really. It's a vicious circle.

I noticed Sooty has a couple of links that mention ebook publication and I guess those sites generate e-traffic?
Personally I lissen to the odd podcast.. usually in the bath.. The Now show Radio 4 even the odd Hancock.. I've even been known to check out casebook podcasts..The 'Bad dream Fancy dress' facebook site has lots of funny utube links.
But like you I've never come across a comedy specific content provider on the net for download material

Punk Anarcho.. this is the 21st Century UK. Barely anyone ever gets up off their own arse and does something off their own bat. The general attitude seems to be that the world owes them a living. Gissa job, etc.
For example.. I've been here about 18 months and in my time have seen several great ideas that could and should be published on an independent media website, yet the trouble is with most of them (World of Will excepted) is that the creators/brainstormers never ever follow their ideas through. They seem to just bung them on here and expect some sort of media sugardaddy to appear and shower them with gratitude and moolah. Rarely happens like that. It's the get-up-off-my-arsers who make breakthroughs, not the ovine crowd.
I think the internet is ripe for its own straight/comedy version of Rebel Inc. (remember them?) and audio spoilers is one way to start - in fact, that particular genre has hardly had its surface scratched. Personally, I don't think that downloads for money should be targetted - traffic should be the number one priority.
Get straight on it Punk Anarcho - I expect a full working website by tomorrow.

0The last thing I wish to do is turn up on a comedy website and start teaching my Gran to suck shit..
It just seems to me that other people are making the internet work in new ways, and I naturally thought that Comedy would be one of he biggest explosions. I mean check utube people are making big bucks out of swearing Parrots and kids on dentist gas..
So I thought why not comedy? And surprised that no one seems to be doing so?
I've had hints that websites are starting to think about it..
Comedy should be ripe for revolution but I guess I was interested in the views of writers who have been on this site for sometime and their experiences
