There are comments about the different nature of the two existing series. The general flavour was the same but the second series had the added dimension of success, and how this affects the lead character.
Most of all it had the added dimension of continuity. The first series was almost old school with the same repeated elements in each episode. There was no need to watch the episodes in a specific order. The second series became a bit more soapopera like...there was a progression which didn't make any sense if you watched the episodes at random order. So, I think there was clearly a different nature to the two existing series.
Also, the second series was a bit "bigger, faster, higher" for me. With more belly laughs, "better" celebrity cameo's and so on. The first series was more low key to me...some (and I) would say more subtle.

I used to like Gervais but after you've seen his influences and how unoriginal he is, its difficult to see him in the same light. Also after his Gervais meets Gary Shandling show its hard not to see him as an arrogant prick with boardeline anti-semetci tendancies.
Other thing Gervais does is make everyone act like him.
Aaron told me in another thread about the influences of Gervais after I praised him (Gervais, not Aaron) being cutting edge. But it's the same in pop music. There have always been some innovators no sod knows about these days whereas other artists realized the potential of the new thing absorbed it and got rich and famous with it. I'm the first to say, that we should praise the original inventor but I'd also say don't call the profiteer a thief. He recognized the potential of the new thing in a time when so called experts didn't care, took it and added something (more spectacular and commercial) to it and made it accessible to the world.
David Bowie always worked that way albeit he wore his influences on his sleeve and supported his inspirators.
(plz forgive me my terrible English but I'm still struggling with the writing of longer passages)
