Actually I think white cigarette packets could herald an economic boon in the UK.
Why?
Well if you think about it, how many half baked, doomed-to-fail business must have been launched on the basis of someone 'doing their sums on the back of a fag packet'?
So, if we extend this logic and assume that previously, on the seductively designed cig packs (with very little blank space for jotting on)there wasnt really enough room for a detailed analysis/business plan to be presented - resulting in many eventual business failures ocurring.
So.... these all white packs will provide the opportunity to take a far more detailed market overview/SWOT analysis/profit and turnover projections for any aspiring entrepreneur, by literally providing more white space for their calculations.
Take it a step further and assume they buy a 200 pack carton -that's 20 packs of clean white pristine thin cardboard to scribble away on! I bet if Tesco were launching today they wouldnt even need so much paper for their business plan.
This all, in turn, leads to a healthier business environment and economy as a whole (admitedly - not necessarily healthier business proprietors though)
Here's the kick.....the increases in corporation tax from these well planned/researched thriving businesses will more than offset the decline in tobacco tax that is expected to occur via the white pack initiative.
The real payoff?
These succesful entrepeneurs, even though, obviously, heavy smokers with poor health, would more than likely have private medical insurance - meaning no strain on the NHS coffers when their physical decline, as a result of being nicotine addicts, eventually kicked in.
Every cloud has a silver line..or every smokers' diseased lung has a potentially cancerous lining...take your pick.
I don't think the majority of smokers have private insurance- I'm sure they would deny it to 'at risk' people.
If they have 'Plain packs' how are they getting the 'photo' evidence that is on packs now across?.
Alcohol is a big killer, so plain bottles there?... Any fast food emporium, ok no adverts, plain white? as fat is a killer? Most young kids are obese- 50%, so what do we address here?
Alcohol and unhealthy foods are okay in moderation. Cigarettes aren't.
OH yes they are! anyway what's moderation?, to some people its coco-pops bacon egg fried bread beans sausage, I have porridge? Never eat burgers or chips avoid fat, so my 10 fags don't seem to bad?
Also limit myself to 2 glasses of wine out, 1 glass of cider in OK.
Every time I see this f**king thread and others like it, all it makes me want to do is go for a smoke.
So maybe the screens and blank fag packets are a good thing? Out of site, out of mind? Whenever I get the chance to sit outside of a pub for example, I associate that with smoking time. If I'm in a shop, I may not remember to buy those fags because they aren't on display and until the time I realise that will be one less cigarette I've had that day until I buy a new pack that is.

On the plus side, numbers have dropped significantly since last week.

That was funny Brian, very funny
Not! reactionist rubbish, look to other causes of ill health, alcohol, fat, and driving, All ignored but unhealthy and costs NHS millions.

That's not true at all. Only 50% of smokers die from smoking related illnesses - which includes heart disease - which also kills 50% of non-smokers.
A regular smoker can easily consume half a million cigarettes in their life-time. Try consuming half a million Baccardi Breezers or quarterpounders with cheese and see how your major organs stand up.

Smoking is not good for the heart.

Isn't that turning around what I said though?
I said alcohol and fatty foods are okay in moderation, ie not having much. Whereas cigarettes do still harm you, even if you only smoke a few a week.
If cigarettes don't harm you if used in moderation (which may be so), then I take it back.
