I was ill, asked a friend to go shopping, the fags were too difficult!- next petrol etc. Frigging Crazy!

From December in Australia smoking products will have to be displayed in plain packaging. In some states they already have to be out of view. The idea seems to be that it will discourage people (especailly the young) from starting if they can't see them or the packaging isn't appealing. I guess in about 5-6 years they will have some idea if it's working or not.
Of course Government won't ban it beacuse they get money from the sales, they still seem happy to moan about how much it costs the health system to pay for people suffering from lung problems etc.

Firstly if you're ill why do you need a fag?
and secondly why couldn't you just tell your friend the brand name?
I think it's a good idea, I can see how it could help stop people taking up smoking. It won't make seasoned smokers suddenly give up, obviously. But I'm sure a lot of young people (and older ones) like being associated with the image attached to the certain brand they choose, and there won't be any image with a plain box.

I would've thought kids in school will smoke anything, regardless of brand. I know there will be a point when branding comes into it, others being cooler or whatever. But the brands would still exist. What do they have on cigerattes boxes anyway? People with lung diseases and giant tumors! What kind of cool branding is that? Are kids these days judging the quality of the fags by the health warning?
I hate the new sliders. I always smoke the same brand but some stores charge significantly higher prices than others. And by the time the person has got it out and scanned it, there's almost a point of no return. I can refuse to pay that price. But who can be arsed to f**k about like that when you have queued up for ages?
Maybe it's a conspiracy!

When I was at Uni all the "cool" kids smoked Marlborough cigarettes because they sponsored Formula One and had the "cool" red and white packaging.
If packaging and branding wasn't effective companies wouldn't plough millions of pounds into it.

I've never been a smoker, but I remember once thinking if they made cigarettes that came in pretty colours I'd probably at least try one. (I wouldn't have tried a second since they taste utterly f**king disgusting, but still.)

They taste nice! You just haven't found your brand yet. When I started working at the shop, behind the fag counter, I used to sample all different flavours, a lot of them were horrible, especially the cheap brands. But I smoke Amber Leaf and boy is it smooooth.

To be honest I will smoke bloody cheapest! that pays for any lung cancer in taxes.
I used to be choosy buying 'Silk Cut' not for brand Ads- I liked mild taste , as I don't follow sport I am not aware of the Ads there.
I know a lot of chums now 'roll there own', buying 'blackmarket' whenever they can.
No one has mentioned yet the other plain labels? I wanted to widen this debate from just cigs.
Honestly, alchohol is next- lovely nights in pub with no bar and 'whitecupboards'
The prob' with friend was as they are NOT displayed, could'nt remember what size!
The Health issue was, tired through 'Thyroid disease'- not a good day - no sleep as she has a car, she offered to get them for me- no chest disease at the minite .
