On a lighter note. Today I started a possible "new hobby", twitch is Oil painting. It's all lovely and pleasant and I have myself setup in the conservatory, it's a sunny day. Oh, I feel very middle-class lalala.

I really have no idea what I'm doing though. I've watched/read a few beginners tips and they always seems to jump from step one: showing you what equipment you need to step 47: Painting like a f**king pro.

Where's the in between bits? I want practical tips like, paint from dark to light. But that seems to be it. So I'm just taking the message that the best thing to do is to just dive right in, so I have.

Starting painting an apple. I didn't have any apples, so I just made it up. I'm fairly confident of of my art skills. I did it. I did a very basic apple shape (which is a circle). I had a basic lighting going on. One side was dark, t'other was light. Problem is I only know how to sketch, so I "sketched" the paint onto the canvas. I don't know how to use a paint brush. But whatever, it looked ok.

Then I got cocky and painted the shadow. F**k. This is where you need a reference. Somehow within seconds it turned into a big blob of black hole. Kept trying to fix it but just made it worse. So I carried on with the actual apple. Oh, look now my brush has black on it. wash, wash, wash, wash, wash. That should do it. I think I'll work on the highlights, just keep it simple. A little bit of white... oh shit there's still black on my brush... oh no my lovely apple is now a rotting apple... cover it up with the red colour I was using for the apple... oh, no now that's black too.... arghhhhh... f**k this.

I HATE OIL PAINTING.

Multiple brushes needed methinx. and lots of brush cleaner.

Are there not any suitable training videos on YouTube? There seem to be videos (some good, some bad) on just about every other skill.

Try a painting-by-numbers kit first, just to get the hang of using the paint & brushes ?

Which is why the new stations enclose the actual tube train space and only open the enclosure doors when the train is in and stopped.

No enclosures here, though.

Mental.

The chip van is brilliant- they venue own it themselves as a quirky evening food option- I think we're going for the 'cone of chips with two small portions of fish' for I think £6.50. Much cheaper than the buffet or hog roast, and I think it's a bit interesting and fun. Plus the fact it is cones is nice. I will insist they are proper paper cones though and not the nasty polystyrene ones!

And obviously I meant 12 grand, you meanies.

Love that idea!

Love that idea!

Yay! I think the guests will, too. Nice and greasy to soak up the booze :D
The venue lady says the guests always love it, so it's a win win for me- save money and keep the masses happy!

I’m gonna chuck my two pennies in here. I’m not saying that any of the info out there is “wrong” or “right”, I’ll just say how I started oil painting.

Drawing in pencil came first when I was about 10. Then I discovered charcoal and rubbers and carried on..

..and throughout all this, there were favourite paintings that I coveted, but not being able to afford them, I decided to try copying.

(Get an image of any painting (you don’t have to like it) and do a copy of it to a scale that suits you. IMO it’s not the drawing aspect that’s tricky (you can always trace), it’s the colour matching – but it’s a fantastic way to practice mixing colour. I started with very precise copies of Van Goghs (Starry Night, The Sower etc.) in thick watercolour).

It wasn’t too long before I started doing my own images in oils, mostly from imagination using pareidolia, but also from prelim drawings, photos and life sittings.

Subsequently I went to Art College, where I was introduced to the Claude Glass (a black mirror which translates the relative tonality of different shades of colour into monochrome shades) and black and white emulsion paint, which is a cheap yet very effective medium for sketching..

..and it all continued from there.

Enjoy it: it can be brilliant.

Just make sure your guests don't have any food allergies/intolerances (not butting in, just have a few coeliac friends who can't have 'normal' fish & chips).

It's a nightmare having to cater for everyone.

It's your day!

F**king Hell Putters hope you feel better see a doctor boss doesn't sound healthy

Yeah, got an appointment in a bit.

Mel Gibson just threw up in a film I was watching. Make sure you don't have radiation poisoning.

I don't think any of our guests do, but I will put a thingy on the invitations to ask. I won't be entertaining minor intolerance though (wheat bloating), they can just bring a packed lunch.

That's a good idea, I wouldn't worry about that either.

My friend feels left out when she has to ask about everything herself, especially if she's a guest (but I'm talking about general parties, not wedding ones). Coeliac disease (gluten allergy) is more than that, although not fatal like some allergies can be. She misses having fish and chips from a chippie.

Thanks for that. Sounds like a good idea.

Poor Putters, I hope you feel better soon. Is it the other end too (please don't describe it, a simple yes or no will suffice)? Make sure to keep hydrated.

:D

I've bought all the oils now :D

I'm okay, I just need a good source of learning some techniques.

Come September there should be evening classes starting in any local college, just look online maybe for a prospectus.

Yes, that's a real bitch of a thing- my ex's mother was coeliac and she had a rotten time of it. If anyone replies telling me they have a wheat intolerance though I'm going to make them get a medical allergy test, otherwise they've got to stop being douches.

I'm 99% we don't have anyone with MAJOR allergies (peanut etc), coeliac or lactose intolerance though, which are the biggies. I hope not anyway.

Also bollocks to children. Children ruin weddings.

And us parents do like a night out occasionally ;)
