Alan Partridge On Open Books With Martin Bryce Page 2

Saw two little clips and thought the same, this is not AP, this is Coogan. It was predictable and it's a bit old hat now. This chipping away at an old sitcom idea or character is tedious now, imo. If he wants to bring him back then put him back into a proper primetime TV sitcom, preferably where he was, at the BBC, where people expect to find him.

I can't believe the BBC would turn down another AP series if it was good, but what Coogan is doing here is not good but piddling rehashes of satiric sketches that Peter Cook and others did far better far long ago. Series 2 ten years ago showed how little good new comedy there was left in AP and this tired drivelling stuff is confirming it. Probably why BBC won't do another. And what the hell is the Martin Bryce reference all about??

Coogan, forget Partridge, it's making you look naff yourself, get some new stuff created or bring back Saxondale if you have to keep doing old characters. I would like to see The Trip series 2 finally appear as well, where is it?

Coogan, forget Partridge,

Plenty of life in it; the recent Mid-Morning Matters web-series was brill, 'Welcome To The Places Of My Life' had lots of goodness, and the 'I, Partridge' book was top notch.

But if it's vintage AP and that good then I want to see it on TV, not a little laptop at strange times of the day. And what little I saw of the book thing was a bit weak and very unoriginal, not top notch. That conceited autobography scenario's been done so many times, by Cook, Corbett, Benny Hill, Sykes, Python, the Bucket actress in her other role and others I can't remember or haven't seen. It's been used in films a lot too. I cannot believe Steve Coogan is so bereft of new material he had to dredge up one of the most over done comedy scenarios ever done to death. Teary I am starting to question his judgment.

I found this enjoyable - although not quite up to the same standard as Welcome to the Places of my Life.

The highlights for me were the excerpts from Alan's autobiography.

I never got the Chris and Martin joke?

The programme was called Open Books with Martin Bryce...but the presenter was called Chris? And when Alan, in my opinion understandably, gets confused and calls him Martin...it's a gag...but I just don't get why there's the Martin/Chris confusion in the first place? If the programme was called Open Book with Chris whatever...and AP called him Martin...I could see where the joke was.

Somebody help me with this one...I've been racking my brains about it and it's bugging me.

At the start the host states he's Chris whatever and filling in for Martin. Before Alan calls him Martin they mention that Chris has sent Alan his book and later Alan jumps on him for having bad reviews... kinda establishing Alan should know who he's talking to.

I totally missed the explanation of Chris/Martin too. Thanks, MT.

But still none of that explains why they give the bloke the same name as a favourite sitcom character! Is he supposed to be the same character? Doesn't look like him. Huh? Someone please explain this oddness.

What sitcom character?

He's complaining, again, about Partridge poncing himself up for an appearance on a poncey cultural programme. Apparently that's unfitting.

No no, that was one I made earlier. This one's from the last part of that rant, please read the posts more carefully. Tut tut and all that.

What sitcom character?

Martin Bryce of EDC. Why choose the same name if he's not the same character? I don't get it, unless he is the same character, I haven't seen more of 20 seconds of the online Partridge thing. Ofcourse I could've made huge mistake on the names but as I have the boxset of EDC I'm sure I haven't. Huh?

I would imagine it's coincidence or maybe an homage to the EDC Martin (he is a great character). That said maybe it is meant to be the same Martin Bryce from EDC... but since we'll never see another episode of Open Books we'll never know. The host Robert Popper is playing isn't Martin, it's Chris whatever standing in for him.

Oh I see. Still it's a confusing set up just by throwing his name in there. Afraid I can't be bothered to watch it to find out. If they put I'm AP 3 on BBC then I'd watch. All this branching off stuff I find a bit too gimmicky.

I really enjoyed this too, I was never really massive Alan Partridge fan until this new stuff has been on Sky Atlantic.

DVD now available to pre-order.
