Lexx was twisted and original and like Farscape, owes a massive amount to Classic Who. Andromeda on the other hand just looked like a porn film without the shagging.

I wouldn't count Buffy (or the superior Angel) as sci-fi though, they're much more in the fantasy realm.

As for the Doctor's Wife - it can't hold a candle to the ST:TNG Borg episodes, especially Yesterday's Enterprise.

Farscape good call.

Now that was amazing and very much what Lexx could have been.

Fantasy and Scifi are pretty interchangeable.

The only comparison with the Borg were the shaky special effects. Fair point.

But the Borg were ok as villains but inherently ridiculous (eek their walking towards me slowly, well walk away slightly faster).

With Moffat, everything's more complex and, I would say, adult.

They're certainly more convoluted and bloated with faux emotional baggage. I think my biggest problem with the show is that I never feel that any of the main characters are in danger, even the fake death of the Doctor from the last series left me feeling 'yeah right'.

The other problem with creating a universe where you seemingly make up the rules every week is that it's difficult to take any of it seriously.

:O

Hand in your phaser wrong boy! Merlin is not the same as Battlestar Gallactica.

C'mon we all have to shelter from the normals in Forbidden Planet together

And the show is definitely due to a proper companions death.,

:O It's that kind of talk that landed us with Indiana Jones and the f**king flying saucers. Shame on you.

Right and the Ark of the Covenant was more sensible?

Unless you think it does. For me, ST:TNG doesn't hold a candle to Who. I always think of Trek as being pretty sterile and dull in comparison; but if that's what you prefer.

I rewatched STNG on CBS Action lately.

And you know it's pretty damned good. But the scifish and action packed episodes aren't so great.

But the slower more thoughtful ones are actually great, I actually really like the one after the battle with the Borg. Where the crew just take a break on earth and Picard meets up with his brother and gets pissed.

Yes, I like it too. For me the Borg are basically a rip-off of the Cybermen, tweaked a bit. They basically managed to make the Cybermen into something scary, like they should be.

nb I watched some of the 60s era Dr Who and well it puzzled me. It was so crude, the effects and sets so awful it wasn't even ironic. It was just terrible (seeds of destruction). Compared to what other BBC shows and certainly US shows were doing at the same time it just well puzzled me.

The Borg had a short shelf life and just about made it to that episode with Lore in it.

Regading sets and effects, it was on almost every week of the year and had no money; often shot in three blocks 'as live'. It was not sophisticated.

True certainly true.

But I think Quatermass had similar restrictions and yet it was magnificent.

And the original 1984 play on BBC1 was not only done for buttons, it was done for buttons live.

Live I tells ya.

Try doing that today!

Perhaps part of the problem is how massively ambitious the show has always been.

The current one; needs a new set and pretty much new cast each episode.

Sure, but how many episodes of that were there? It was short run, Who didn't have the luxury of that, it had to be on, no matter what, every week. Must have been a terrible slog, quality often pushed aside in the panic just to get something in front of camera.
