What ever happened to critique? Page 9

I used to frequent the critique area but not being very good ourselves kept the comments to a minimum.
Except for sootyj where every insult or jibe was given with much relish and thoroughly deserved! :D
A number of things stopped us; mainly personal issues, some major.
But also the thought that as we were learning the 'trade' that we should concentrate on refining what we had written such as sit-com or sketch show with a view to submitting to prod cos etc.
Obviously we never made it!
Now we struggle to meet up to write together and have different views on what genre when we do.
I'd love to have a crack at writing on my own but feel guilty for even thinking it never mind actually doing it.
Thus my time on here is nowhere near as often as it used to be and certainly not to post items for critique. And again I'm not sure I have the comedic mastery to be critical of others.
Except sootyj! :P Whistling nnocently

What is the preferred etiquette for posting sitcoms into Critique? Is it ok to post the whole thing for honest (and brutal) appraisal, or is it better to put up individual scenes to make it more manageable? Or some combination of the two, so posting the opening scene then a link to the full thing so that if people like it they can read the whole thing?

And yes I DO have a tendency to over-think things, how did you know?

No good question.

Unless you're sure it's brilliant I wouldn't post the whole thing, it seems to piss people off.

Post a few key scenes and if it gets a good response post more.

That is perfect.

I don't post in there half as often as I should but will try and get back to posting more regularly.

A sketch is easy to read in Critique format. A sitcom is a hard read in that layout and I prefer to read a properly-formatted version. And preferably printed out so I can scrawl all over it.

I don't contribute much to BCG, so I've decided that I'll give feedback to anything* posted in Critique through the month of August. In fact, I'll trudge back and do all of July, whilst I'm at it. But remember, I don't know what funny is.

(*That's anything of merit, Sooty. Not just anything, like a pastie, for instance)

I post a splurge of feedback every time I put something new in showcase but it's not as much fun reading through them these days.

Some kind of rating system might invigorate the section. Being able to see which sketches are getting high scores and are worth a read might make the reader's experience more rewarding. And that's who we need to encourage right now, not the writers.

It sucks if your sketch gets low scores but it's no different to getting badly rated on YouTube. Or having people walk out of your stand-up set without telling you why.

Oh now what have I done?

He's referring to your stripping routine sootyj.

It's not what you've written, Sooty; it's the way you've written it.

Dan

I don't understand what I am currently being accused of?

Something to do with pasties?

It's that clique again no doubt.

When I joined BCG the Critique section was a vibrant and fun place to be with lots of good material being posted daily and some really helpful suggestions on how to make it even better...

Unfortunately a section of BCGers, who appear not know the difference between critique and criticism, would invariably descend to turn each thread into a contest as to which smartarse could make the best smartarse comment...

Old hands might just yawn and ignore the smartarses, new posters are more likely just to clear off to another site and slag off BCG with their experience...

Find a way to stop the trollers and you'll get your Critique section back up and running in no time...

Remember, words don't kill people, people do...!
