An American headed to the UK-- will this work?

I'm an American living in a non-English speaking country. Every few months though, I have the chance to visit the UK. I just got back from a trip where I attended some open mics, since I was thinking about trying it myself.

I put together this little piece and wanted some feedback on if it might fly were I to present it at an open mic in the UK.

Any ideas? Advice? Criticism?

Thanks for any feedback and I'm sorry if you're a Scottish woman.....

You've got a lot of confidence and a nice laid back approach.

But you need to massively tighten your material.

The space between funny lines is to long and it kinda kills it.

You've got that wonderful, polished American confidence, so you'll look good on stage. The structure of the set was well put together and it all felt very natural. An American looking at UK life has been done many times before, but you've got enough charm to keep people interested. The only bit I thought strange was the section about assuming black people are in London for the Olympics. London has plenty of black people, so they're not a rare sight.

The main problem I had was that there weren't enough laugh out loud bits. The line about attractive women in Scotland being from Poland made me laugh, but that was the only one. In front of a crowd you might get more laughs though - a crowd always laughs more than one person on the net.

I'd definitely advise you to take the plunge and do some open mic nights. You'll learn a lot more from doing it live to an audience. Let us know how you get on.

Yeah, there's some good laughs in there. Confident definitely. It meanders in places, could cut a bit of flab out

There were a few minor language gap bits.

Wales is the stereotypical home of sheep shagging. Scotland is more famed for alcoholism, heroin addiction and heart disease. Shame, cos the bit on the attractiveness of sheep was good.

And oh, yeah, the black/olympics thing. I'd lose that.

I enjoyed watching this, the 9 minutes flew by. It didn't make me actually laugh much despite being entertaining, but when it's tightened up and performed in the right atmosphere I think it could be much funnier.

My specific points have already been mentioned, so I'll just agree that the sheep shagging section seemed weird to attribute to Scotland - maybe you could keep it in but include something along the lines of someone has since told you that you had the wrong stereotype and now you know that, as Overlay says, Scotland's one is drugs and alcohol, which makes just as much sense having seen the locals (horribly clumsy wording, sorry). I'm just suggesting that because the bit that made me laugh the most was your comment that having sex with a salmon 'sounds difficult' (I liked the wording and my sense of humour isn't the most sophisticated) so it would be nice to keep the section in :)

The black/Olympics thing didn't make much sense to me either unfortunately. As I said though overall I thought it was good and you're bound to be able to make it even better, and as the others have said your delivery is excellent.

Hey that's great feedback my UK friends. I'll cut it in half and work on some of the other points you made- thanks!
