British Comedy Guide

Hi there

I've just registered and thought I'd introduce myself as suggested.

I'm a 41 year old average Joe called Keith, and have been going through something of a mid-life crisis the past couple of years. Although I have not done anything remotely stupid apart from being mildly depressed, and testing my wife's patience to near breaking point, I have been searching for something to give my life a bit of meaning. My wife calls them fads.

I'm your typical 9-5 office worker, stagnating in a job that does not fulfil me, fantasising that I really should be leaving some sort of mark on the world. I've often pondered a career in writing (first stirrings around the age of 17,18 inspired by Stephen King and my O Level/A Level English Lit teachers). Of course like many people I've never done anything about it. Life tends to take over I guess. Mortgages, marriage, dogs, work (no kids), all just happen, and before you know it you are seemingly trapped and don't quite ever have the balls to do something about it. So my latest fad is to research the possibility of comedy writing and that led me here!

I do quite enjoy making people laugh (at the moment this only takes the form of a witty response on a forum here, engaging in silly facebook banter with friends there), and I definitely enjoy laughing (that surprised you after my rather morose opening I can tell ) so I might just give it a go in my spare time. Sitcom writing has definitely piqued my interest so will give the Marc Blake books a go I think and try and find out if I have any natural talent for this sort of thing.

I love all sorts of comedy but especially British "late 30/early 40 somethings" such as Adam and Joe, Pegg, Frost, Wright, Serafinowicz, Popper, Mitchell and Webb, Charlie Brooker, Vic and Bob too. I'm currently loving Adam Buxton's BUG, The Ricky Gervais Show, Mock the Week (esp Hugh Dennis et al on the Scenes We'd Like To See round, he makes me cry with laughter) repeat showings of The IT Crowd and The Inbetweeners, Alan Partridge Mid Morning Matters, I cannot wait for the new series of Friday Night Dinner.

The missus and I often go to watch Stand-Up shows in Southampton, Portsmouth or Bournemouth (most recently Rhod Gilbert, soon to see Micky Flanagan and Sarah Millican), and highlights have been Mark Watson, Russell Howard, Bill Bailey, Harry Hill, Jack Dee, and Lee Evans to name but a few.

Thoroughly enjoy US sitcoms like Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Scrubs, and am rather addicted to Channel 4's repeats of Everybody Loves Raymond at 8am every morning.

I'm usually late to things and then kick myself that I was not a hip, early adopter, ahead of the game but what the hey, if I find it funny I guess it does not matter when I find it funny right?

Crikey I'd better stop there before I need a script editor. Hope to join in on the boards. See you all around! Cool

Welcome and nice introduction Wave

Hi zooo and ShandonBelle. I should have also said I use parentheses (brackets) a lot.

:D

If I stare at the default avatar long enough, I start to see Morph/Chas from Take Hart.

Must change that ASAP...

Welcome, hope you enjoy it here. I'd usually say tell us more about yourself but you've covered that [I liked it; here's some square brackets for you].

;)
