British Comedy Guide

How to start

I want to start a small hobby job as a stand up comedian. But my problem is I am living 25 milea away from the nearest comedy club. Does anybody know if performing at parties is a decent idea?

I can't offer you any advice from experience. But drive 25 miles and give it a go before you do anything else. If you enjoy it, the 25 mile journey may not feel quite as far.

My only problem is that I have no money and I can't drive because im 15. I just need a strting point

My problem is that I am skint and am only 15 and just want to gain confidence

That never stopped Bill Hicks!

Any chance of a train or getting someone to give you a lift? Otherwise, and I'm not a stand-up so don't quote me, but I'd've thought the parties would be a good second best.

I don't have the money and im not sure if comedy clubs accept 15 year olds

Could you perform at school? Are you confident enough to do that? Why not start off pouring out some of your creativity to the internet or other sources such as the school newspaper or local forum, whatever kids do these days!

I was thinking about gathering an audience and/or putting a video on YouTube. I have a few jokes up my sleeve and a decent idea on how to make a story of them.

Go for it. Punk rock! No rules. Make it happen yourself. etc.

Perform wherever and whenever you can, but bear in mind that parties, where people are not there specifically to watch and listen to comedy are some of the hardest gigs to play.

There's a reason that pros get paid big bucks to do parties and corporates, it's because they are tough and, usually, not a lot of fun.

Prepare to be ignored, heckled, shouted at, ignored some more and generally patronised.
