One of the greats RIP
Eric Sykes RIP Page 2
It sounds daft to say about an 89 year old, but I was shocked at the news; he had so much life left in him.
R.I.P
Thought He was 92? but adored as a kid his wonderful gentle humour.
Stellar man. RIP

Ditto those sentiments exactly. I never realised he was so hard of hearing. The Plank was a classic.
Very sad news.
A true great of British comedy.

He was almost totally deaf. That's why he wore those glasses - seriously! But then he started losing his sight too.
One of the greats of Brtish comedy of the 20th century and most respected by those in the industry.

Eh? Please elaborate.

Sykes' huge success appears all the more remarkable when considering that he had been almost completely deaf since his early 30s, and suffered with extremely poor eyesight for much of his life too. The horn-rimmed spectacles which would become his trademark look were in fact a sophisticated hearing-aid enabling him to sense vibrations.

(He was actually poor-sighted too, so they weren't entirely a trick.)
Nice little tribute by the Now Show people -playing the Sykes theme under the credits.
The Plank was great but I always loved the golfing lesson he gave to Jacklin.
RIP Eric. Will be much missed.

Thanks, Aaron. Am impressed.
Eric Sykes was great. God bless him.
I also met him, 20 - 25 years ago when I was a contestant on a show called 15 to 1.
I found out he was a great friend of the host of the show (William G Stewart) and he was hanging around talking and laughing with us nervous contestants. He was such a nice man and will be sadly missed.

BBC Two tonight.
Just been watching some of his silent stuff, It's Your Funeral is a real gem and of course The Plank etc. He was a true great and because he was a writer by nature, generous with his gags.
