Woolworths main downfall was the price of it's entertainment products when compared to the supermarkets.
Say around 10 years ago, where I live the only places to get CDs and DVDs were Woolworths and WH Smith. Then when Asda relocated a few minutes away and stocked the same products but usually between £1-2 cheaper the stock at Woolworths shrank and WH Smith stopped selling most of it altogether.
Another thing was the sheer amount of crap lines they sold, instead of concentrating on just a few they crammed too many low value things (that nobody really wanted) in as possible.
David is correct, but Woolies downfall was further compounded by the Pound Shops for household goods and the TK Maxx / Primark shops for taking on the cut price clothing.
It just couldn't adapt fast enough to the changing face of the British high street and what scum like.
Yep, it also had massive competition in Wilkinsons who offer better products at roughly the same or cheaper prices. Poundshops basically sell every bit of tatty crap (the kind you 'don't want') Woolworths did
