I don't think it's necessarily patronising to women. I worry about if men will abuse it too. I don't think any adult who is able to understand what they're reading needs to be protected from erotic fiction. I think that it being sensationalised as fashionable could be a problem, but yes - maybe that is overthinking.

Men who are abusive will be abusive regardless... they don't need an 'excuse'.

It's been making the news, I'm sure everyone's heard of it. Even if they don't know it's a rudey book.

Pornography has become so all pervasive in our culture that it must be difficult for young people of either gender to have any idea what constitutes a reasonable sexual request. Fifty Shades is unlikely to add much to the general blurring of boundaries.

I thought mainly it was the poor dialogue that had been garnering criticism?

Whats worse than 50 shades of grey?
50 shades of DAVID GREY!

Yes, but I suspect that is a bit of a displacement activity by reviewers who do not want to risk bucking the zeitgeist by committing themselves on the content.

Is this not the tip of a bigger argument about whether women are 'allowed' to enjoy porn or not?

50 Shades success is no doubt down to it's acceptability as a intellectually valid form of lady wank material. It's okay to flick your bean to this, as it's consensual and romantic?

I think the Kindle has kindled interest in this area of literature. Just what is that woman on the tube with the bobby pins and neat head scarf really reading on that innocuous looking device!

Just as a last thing because, of course, I cannot shut up. I think that women are allowed to watch or read as much porn as they like. And are perfectly allowed to masturbate as much as they like - unless it's in an inappropriate place or whatever. I just don't think that that's what this is. I don't think that this book makes porn or masturbation for women okay, or even makes certain sexual fantasies more acceptable. I think it creates a false demand and I'm not quite sure that's the same. But where that goes is another matter I s'pose.

The bits I've seen aren't romantic.

I bet 90% of the people who have bought it haven't even read the bits between the sex scenes.

Ah okay, then I am in full agreement with you there Scats. After the success of 50 Shades, expect a deluge of similarly based material coming to a Kindle near you.

But just like with every fad, it will get oversaturated and become passe. So expect this trend to be short lived until the next fad comes along.

:O No kindle for me, I like sniffing books too much. And as you know, matching the covers with my outfits

I just wonder if it creates a false demand for something other than books though...ANYWAY!

I phoned up the amazon hotline the other day and asked for four Kindles.
