British Comedy Guide

Trying to figure out the name of a show..

I'm from the United States, so this'll be kind of hard for me to describe.

In the 90s I saw a show on PBS (Public Broadcasting System). That's Channel 13 here. It's a television station with public funding. It was on here at some odd hour of the night, like 2AM or 3AM.

So, I'm guessing the show is from the 80s. It had that feel to me.

The only thing I can really remember is it was a guy living in his apartment and he listened to the radio or record player. I don't know if it was totally a comedy or what, because from what I remember it was just that one guy in the whole show or most of the show. Was kind of lonely.

I don't know if there was more than one episode, because they every time I saw the show it was the same thing!

A bunch of years ago I described the show via email to someone and he gave me a possible match to a show I could have bought on VHS tape, but I never did. My memory might have been slightly better then.

Was it Mr Bean? Many of the scenes in that are just him in his flat.

Sounds like the 'Radio Ham' a famous episode of Hancock; was it black and white?

Or if in colour, the Paul Merton re-make:

Well, it definitely is not Mr. Bean. He's famous and most people know of him. From what I remember this guy talked.

It was definitely colour. I looked up the Paul Merton re-make and found it on YouTube. Not it. Paul doesn't look familiar.

From what I remember the apartment had a more open feel to it / cleaner. Didn't seem as cluttered. It was brighter.

If there was a radio or record player, he only listened to it.

Sean's Show?

Also, not sure how old Paul is but this guy seemed younger. Could be Sean's Show, but I can't find any video online to view in my country yet. Once I can find some video I can know yes or no.

Will this not work outside the UK? http://www.youtube.com/show?p=Eeuh5DFQV9U

Not Sean's Show. I was able to use a proxy, which tricked YouTube into thinking I was from the UK.

I looked through a few episodes and saw his kitchen and a counter with a small island. In this guy's apartment you only saw the living room from what I remember.

Can you describe what he looked like?

No unfortunately not. I only remember so far that he "looked" younger than Paul.

I don't think he went to work during the show I saw. He just fooled around in the apartment.

Last time I had asked about this, I think I emailed whatever I knew about the show to some random guy I found with a UK Comedy listing website and he emailed me back with what could have been a match. The VHS was available on Amazon I think, but sadly I didn't buy it.

Maybe I posted elsewhere in the past.. I'll try to do some more Google search and pull up info.

I'm also going through this list:

To see if anything rings a bell.. and I'm going through some of the links to look. I'm up to the M's.

While searching through that list, I should add.. what's up with American TV.. do they do nothing original? I'm reading up on Man About The House (UK) and Three's Company (US). Our show is almost a direct copy. Chrissy and Jo (here it's Chrissy and Janet).. Robin Tripp (here is Jack Tripper).. catering student.. party where he falls asleep in the bathtub.. almost direct copy.

What's up with a lot of British Sitcoms only having say 6 - 18 episodes? I saw a few shows that had 3 seasons, yet only 17 episodes.. yet American shows it's like 1 season and 11 episodes. Some shows going on to like 150 - 200 episodes.

I'm sure there's a thread about this very issue...

Well, I'm not going to find it.

Britain exports more TV, in format sales and direct repeats, than any other nation. We did it first, IIRC, and we do it the best. Wait till you get to Steptoe & Son. It'll blow your mind!

There are various reasons for this. It's largely due to the differences in the development of television between our countries: in the US it's more of a business, a commodity even, whereas here it's still very artistically driven.

It's too bad it's not artistically driven. We'd have a lot more good shows. Freaks & Geeks was one of my favourite. It only lasted 18 episodes before it got canceled.

Do a lot of people over there have cable TV or do a large amount of people still watch stuff like regular channels?

Again it's a very different system. Subscription TV here compliments rather than replaces the free to air. Unless you have a pathological problem with them, everyone watches the standard BBC One, ITV, etc.
