I understood what your message on 'socialisation' meant Nat, agree mothers are very important in a boys' childhood, and indeed can leave 'negative indications' in adulthood- other female role-models can help to 'modify' these tendencies. (As can fathers etc.)

Quote: Renegade Carpark @ June 11 2012, 11:25 AM BSTVideo games are just the latest scapegoats for societies ills - jazz music, heavy metal, Teddy Boys, comic books, video nasties, etc. - they're all really convenient and easily labelled products that the moral minority can tackle.
And to be honest, I'd rather my future children stayed in playing World Of Warcraft for hours on end instead of snorting the latest designer amphetamine in a club at 4am.
Doesn't mean they were wrong in their day.
I mean in Shakesperean times; there was a massive out break of merchants chopping a pound of flesh off of people, and star crossed lovers commiting suicide.

Quote: Nat Wicks @ June 11 2012, 12:40 PM BSTOh no, it's just for me. I'm a big reader upper on subjects as a general rule. I just wanted to know if this was soemthing that existed in the net-o-sphere or whether it was personal opinion. I never meant to denegrate your point by implying that it wasn't backed up. I genuinely do have an interest!
This I totally agree with. Sitting a kid in from of Modern Warfare will never take the place of actually raising them.
I'm sure it'll exist somewhere (I wouldn't know where though) because I'm right, I am almost always.
Don't worry about Marc, he's just being playful... it's because he likes the 'cut of my jib' secretly...
... and he has an ability to make several points, even if some are a bit pompous (come on, you know they are) with an economy of words that I find, truly, admirable.
I prefer the word bombastic.
And if you find my economy of words admirable you should see how I handle who's round it is

Fair enough... though thanks for putting that song in my head!
Oh I know you'd find it a joy to buy me a beer... you can't kid me.
You should read one of his novels! Crikey more like an essay; succinct is the word! (entertaining though)
Quote: Renegade Carpark @ June 11 2012, 11:50 AM BSTAh, that is from an American / Canadian study, not a UK one. Do not portray us in the same light as those ultra violent teens. I'm sure factors such as broken familiar relationships due to divorce play a massive part.
The article sootyj posted seems to point fingers at previous abuse rather than videogames:
Youth who commit sexual offences have a history of being abused or neglected. A Canadian study found that 33% of adolescent male offenders were abused or neglected. An American study found that 60% of teen sex offenders were physically abused, 50% were sexually abused and over 70% had experienced neglect. Over 50% of youth experienced a combination of all forms of abuse. Sexual victimization appears in the backgrounds of a significant number of female adolescent sex offenders.
As a much higher cause. But the colonels got 7 secret ingredeients, cjust cause MSG is 98% doesn't mean you can miss out the rest,

I'm still going to point my finger at family upbringing, mental illness, abuse, personality, environment and the gang (literal or not) that a kid runs with as opposed to video games.
My son spent way too much of his life playing ultra-violent military video games but he hasn't assaulted anyone in real life and I never could talk him into joining the military. Then he switched to games with dragons and fairies and hookers with big boobs and still grew into a compassionate young man with a job, a long-term relationship and a polite and friendly personality.
Well more they exacerbate preexisting tendencies.
And I don't think anyone is talking about violent games in issolation. More a combination of malevolent influences/

Phew. Thank goodness for that I thought you were going to say he had become a streetwalker!

In many cases it is a probably a combination of things. A combination of playing violent video and ubringing may turn some people to violence but not others. You also mentioned mental Illness, for someone with a mental illness playing violent games could act as a "trigger," but it wouldn't be the single cause of the Illness.
While I totally disagree with anyone who claims that gaming causes violence, I can see that maybe the addition of violent games may contribute to a perfect storm of poor upbringing which tips an otherwise normal person into violent criminal teritory.
I got distracted while typing, and by the time I clicked to post everyone else had said exactly what I was saying. Boo.
No Booo didn't say a word. She's sulking because nobody asked where her moustache had gone when she posted her pic!
