Has Ricky Gervais lost the magic? Page 3

The fact that very few comedy stars keep producing the same high quality work year in year out and they don't get slated half as much as Gervais is pretty much confirmation of the sad way many people behave towards the most successful stars today, and jealousy is most certainly a big factor in this, imoo.

No, an awful lot of it's purely down to the numbers. The more people who have heard of you, the more people likely to hate you.

Yes, that's why so many people hate South Park, Clint Eastwood, Nelson Mandela, John Cleese, Tom Baker, John Lennon, Snoopy and Jeremy Beadle.

I think it's mostly down to his persona/personality (the lines seem to be blurred) - we don't really like self-satisfied braggers in Britain.

Well, I did say "an awful lot of it". Of course his persona plays a part in it, but statistically the more people who have heard of you the more people there are likely to hate you.

And, unlike the random names you mentioned, Ricky Gervais is still regularly appearing in the public gaze. I'm not sure when the last time Snoopy presented the Golden Globes, or John Lennon had a prime time BBC2 sitcom about a dwarf out.

Oh, did you miss Working Class Midget?

I hear you. If Johnny Depp changed his name to Johnny Woodstock, then Ricky Gervais would more likely be wearing a tweed monocle and matching spats.
