Hi everybody!
I'll be writing my dissertation on the dubbing of cockney accents in comedy films. (English-German) Therefore I need films where chracters talk in a cockney accent. Best would be recent films and the cockney accent should be an element of the films homour. (for example producing social stereotypes etc.)
Do you know any comedy films where cockneys are portrayed in a minor or mayor role?
Thanks a lot
Cockneys in comedy films
Don Cheadle did an atrocious cockney accent in Ocean's Eleven. But I don't think it was meant to be comedic.
I am afraid there is no such thing as a cockney accent.
Dick Van Dyke's performance in Mary Poppins is the cockney benchmark.
Oh you are being pedantic Mr P
The man is German and we know what he means by cockney accent.
I would suggest 'Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels' There is even a translation of it in that film
And 'Snatch' too, plenty of 'cockney' in both those films

If he is writing a dissertation I would suggest he should know what he means too. Sometimes understanding what is and what isn't gives you a whole framework for an essay. Professor Higgins would probably have something to say on the matter.
How about Kathy Burke in Kevin and Perry go Large.
George Cole was Flash Harry in several old St Trinians films.

I knew someone would mention this. Don't take any notice. Unless the benchmark is under water - or something.
Anything with Jason Statham or Vinnie Jones.
Basically Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels and Snatch
Are the Jacksons.
Yes Vinnie Jones that Watford born cockney! Him and George Michael.

I haven't seen Lock, Stock but was Vinny really a good actor? I honestly can't imagine it.
'No he's terrible.
I actually thought that would help.
I call Jason Statham Jay-fam Stay-fam
and shout it whenever I see him on the telly.
Unfortunately most cockney nowadays seems to be in Guy Ritchie's mockney thrillers.

Wasn't Van Dyke a chronic alcoholic at the time and can't even remember making the film now?

He played a monosyllabic violent thug with real conviction.

He could barely stand-up during Doll on a Music Box.
