That's interesting Obama came out with that in an election year, because you can always bat that kind of stuff out to play by saying its a state issue and wouldn't interfere with their rights.
I suspect he is trying to rattle the cage of the Republican right that Romney wants to keep a lid on. McCain failed to do that following his calamatous Palin appointment.

It was a matter of damage control. Vice President Biden quipped the other day that he firmly supported gay marriage. The press pounced on the press secretary, asking if this was the administration's policy. The secretary tried to bat it away by saying that the president's view was "evolving" and that just made the Obama-friendly press mad. The administration continued to stonewall on his stance until it became clear that his refusal to speak up was hurting his standing in the gay community, so he basically had no choice other than to throw it out there.

A politician telling the truth is always a good thing. A politician lying in order to get elected is always a bad thing. The latest poll shows Romney leading Obama 50% to 43%, so apparently the voters think likewise.
