Is there a plague of drink related racism?
Is Nick Griffin running Wetherspoons?
Quote: sootyj @ May 8 2012, 4:18 PM BSTIs there a plague of drink related racism?
Yes and it's definitely the drink and not the excessive numbers of immigrants in Britain. Tax booze not foreigns, it is obviously the fault of alcohol.
Back in my day, you could throw a brick through some Johnny Foreigners window and nothing happened, now all you have to do is look at them funny on public transport and you're the one going to jail!
It's an outrage or something, etc.

So she's as chavvy as her character in real life? I wouldn't want to tangle with her.

Don't you realise that she is off the telly and under 67 years of age? Under BCG rules, she automatically qualifies as a 'babe'.
She's got massive bangers.

Nb London Met university got its legs smacked recently for having a Muslim friendly booze free zone
Thing is no one asked the Muslim students
It was just a cynical ploy to save on the student union costs

Yo sure 'bout dat Kingfish ?
Quote: Lazzard @ May 7 2012, 11:15 AM BSTPersonally, I think the Mail is worse than the News of the Screws. Pretending it's not a red-top has been brilliant strategy.
Are you colour blind?
Quote: zooo @ May 7 2012, 12:12 PM BSTI don't know about that.
I don't know anyone personally who buys it,
We do!
You should read Liz Jones. Great pieces trying to build up her own image and esteem by comparing herself to every sexy femail celeb.

Is she?

So according to some international education body, the Chinese are top of the pops in education and are now the 'cleverest' nation on Earth.
And here is my problem, I have an incredibly worrying philosophical conflict over describing someone well educated as 'clever'. I mean, sure, the Chinese are churning out Grade A students - but could any of them invent the bagless vacuum cleaner, carbon fibre brakes or I'm Alan Partridge?
So while I'm sure the Chinese are producing an army of competent doctors, lawyers and accountants, where is the innovation, the breakthroughs and the imagination to capitalise on this educational excellence?
Ever since Google and Wikipedia came on the scene, having a vast amount of knowledge stored up in one human brain seems kind of redundant. Everyone is now as knowledgeable as the most intelligent University Challenge contestant and in some cases smarter.
As for the value of education, we have degree holders being forced to work in coffee shops and supermarkets because our political rulers - who all went to the most expensive and educationally prestigious private schools, can't work the economy.
So the question is - does education make you clever?
Interesting.
Certainly most technological innovation is American these days. The fact that you mention Dyson seems to indicate that.
So most innovation is created by a hugely wealthy elite collection of universities. Mixing the most brilliant with the most wealthy.
But without them then all the big science from stealth to cancer treatment via the microchip etc just wouldn't happen. Certainly the only UK institutions in that league are similarly wealthy elite insitutions.
Where as more democratic European insititutions are well rubbish in real terms.
China may be full of clever people. But their whole techno industry is based on copying and parastism
Good points sooty. Though Dyson is British and went to art college before getting into furniture design.
Even though the world has changed rapidly over the last 100 years, the way we are educated hasn't changed. And I'm wondering if we've all been brainwashed to accept that education equals success?
As technology increases, will the ability to speak several languages or remember historical dates be worth anything? Much in the same way that GPS and SatNav has made the skill of map reading redundant?
It also gets more mired when you introduce those with a vested financial interest in education such as teachers unions and highly priced private schools, where it is in their best interests to 'sell' the benefits of education.
Please understand, I am seperating formalised education from a genuine desire to learn, which brings added value that can't be measured financially.
