but didn't want to get fined for not voting.

:O

We don't have that over here. Everyone who doesn't exercise their right to vote is perfectly free to go rioting when the weather is nice.

Not sure how strict they are on it these days, I've heard of people who have never voted and not been fined but I think they may have just got lucky.

I however have the worst luck in the world, so if I didn't vote this would have been the one time they decide to crack down on it.

Have better things to spend money on.

A lot of people will get their names ticked off the roll but will submit a blank form or delibretly mark the boxes wrong.

What kind of fine would it be? Like 10 dollars, or 100? Or 1000? :O

It's $20, doesn't sound like much but that would be $20 I could spend on food. Also we have 3 types of elections (Local, state, federal) so if you got caught each time it would end up been $60. They are held in different years usually so it wouldn't be all at once.

As I said though, the way to avoid voting but getting your name ticked off is to submit a donkey vote.

I think it sounds like quite a good idea really. Since the fine isn't too steep. And you can still vote for 'none of the above' like you say.
Just stops people missing out on voting by being lazy.

Who did you all vote for? C'mon, don't be shy.

I voted for Siobahn Benita as the London Mayor and UKIP for all the Assembly stuff.

The drones will no doubt vote Conservative / Labour as usual, because they hate having to make a choice and fear all change, so I'm not expecting my candidates to win - but hopefully there'll be enough protest votes to shake things up a bit.

Merci beaucoup for sharing.
The results shall be verrrrry interesting.

I have a (mostly uneducated) feeling that Siobhan might get quite a lot of votes. Not enough to win though, one would imagine.

I'm not sure. At least if it is not complusary the people who vote are doing so because they are genuinly interested. Not everyone who choses to donkey vote will submit a blank ballot. Some people just number the boxes at random butthat's kind of silly because it is giving a vote someone.

I think that the people who do that are in the minority but it is something that proably wouldn't happen if not complusary.

At the end of the day I think I would probably still vote in most elections even if it wasn't complusary. I might not like anyone running but at the end of day think I am so lucky live in a country that allows to me choose who I want and to critize them without getting thrown in Jail or tortured.

Your wife probably found it by the sink a week ago and put it in there herself.

'There are strange creatures who roam these lands; conventions of man immaterial to their being.

Expect not the facts of sunrise and sunset to be accepted, for reason has no place in their ever-changing minds.

Stare deep into them at your peril. For just as you see their desire, and respond accordingly, your inability to interpret the hidden will invite mute scorn.'

*abridged version - you are probably right!

Many flights offer it for a fee. It's only available above 10,000 feet.

I was using an iPad. ;)

You broke the FCC law.

No, I did not. I was using WiFi that was offered as a paid service by the airline and it was 100% legal. Do you really think airlines would offer such services if they were illegal and/or dangerous?

Oh, a misunderstanding.

I took this: "iPad autocorrect sucks. Just landed! " to mean that you were trying to use your iPad as you landed.

If you had an iPad with 3G, would you notice easily, if when the plane's wifi was switched off, it automatically reverted to 3G (which AFAICS would be against the FCC law if you were still airborne).
