Does this make me a racist? Page 5

I take it you're accusing me of being racist towards the immigrants?

No, I never pull that, what is typed is seriously something I once read.

When I read your post Cat, I decided that you would be the coolest person to listen to whilst on mushrooms. You ever see Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider? Like that, in the scene before... *spoiler alert* ...before he has his head hacked with a shovel by the rednecks.

Burger King have got themselves into a bit of trouble with their new adverts with Mary J Blige.

I'm a big fan of Mary's and fried chicken so I was quite surprised at the allegations. I've watched the advert, and really can't find anything racist about it.

What a bunch of idiots.

I've noticed there is some kind of a weird stereotype thing in America about black people liking fried chicken. But... so no black person can ever be in an ad involving chicken?
Crazy.

FFS so now a black person potentially can lose work for fear of creating a stereotype?

I know right, it's mental.

second city have done a parody that is definitely racist, but still funny. The Mary J impersonator is brilliant.

nb I'm seeing my practise nurse today.

And she asks me to go into the treatment room whilst she sorts some stuff out. She's left the radio playing some fire and brimstone type Christian stuff. She comes in and switches it over to smooth fm or some such. I guess the assumption was I might be offended or might complain and of course nothing is actually said. I'm not offended, good luck to her. But it bothers me the automatic perception is my feelings need to be protected from potential offence.

I dunno can;t we talk about these sorts of things anymore?

Well you don't KNOW that's why she switched it. (If it really was Brimstoney stuff, she might have been embarrassed. I'd probably prefer it switched off, not cos I'm an atheist, but for the sake of good taste.)

Anyway until we stop taking so seriously the type of easily offended wingnuts that would make an official complaint, everyone has to be mega sensitive - in the workplace at least.

In fact, why didn't you ask her? ;)

I guessed if she was sensitive about it, I didn't want to embarass her.

Besides I was late for a very important pointless meeting about stuff.

One demographic that aren't really given consideration are the atheists, no-one's ever worried about upsetting them!

It seems to me that the fear of upsetting people means we lose out on celebrating their brilliance. As an example Italian people love that they are so passionate and fiery, Indian people are proud that they excel at maths.

Except its shit being a Jew who's crap at maths and couldn't run a business for toffee.

Over expectation is also prejudice.

Next you'll be telling me you can't dance!

Yep. The same goes for watermelon and Kool-Aid, among other things. As usual, political correctness has overcompensated and compounded the problem rather than solved it.

I was in a branch of Boots where I was trying to buy a beard trimmer.

All 3 of the shop assistants I asked lacked the English to be able to help with this most basic request.

Am I racist for being sligtly miffed and having to find said device myself.

I would have mimed trimming my beard, but thought it might be offensive to Jews or Muslims

As some others have said I don't think it makes you racist for expecting them to understand English.

A few years ago in central London I tried to order a burger in a famous burger chain. As I am allergic to the bread bit I asked for it without the bun. Now the guy who served me obviously didn't have English as his first language. The first time I had asked for the burger without the bun, he said he didn't understand. I then tried several ways to say this including "no bread" and I want everything in the burger but no bread. He then asked another staff member, again someone who's first language wasn't English. I thought they'd understood but when it came it had the bread.

When I'm been served somewhere and especially in well known place I expect the staff to have at least a basic knowledge of the main language in that country.

At the same time if you are going to live somewhere you should try to learn the language of that country. I used to work in retail and would sometimes get abused by people because they couldn't understand me. Sometimes it was something simple like trying to explain I didn't have a particular item, like when I tried to ask for the burger there is sometimes a limited number of ways to explain something.

As you're Australian, I bet you didn't bother to learn English before you came over here. ;)
