American Comedies Brits Like? Page 5

Not too keen on US sitcoms.

But some of my faves are Taxi, Golden Girls, Cheers, Married With Children, and The Phil Silvers Show.

But without any doubt The Big Bang Theory is my all time favourite.

Adore it.

Just read that NBC is going to reboot "The Munsters" as "Mockingbird Lane" and Eddie Izzard is up for the role of Grandpa Munster.

I was intrigued by it until I saw his name. I just cannot stand him. Maybe in an acting role he'll be a bit ... acceptable. Of course it may very well be total shite anyway.

I'm pretty sure I read it was going to be a drama... more akin to the current NBC show Grimm.

*edit*
Just checked Wikipedia and it is an hour long drama they're making.

Doesn't that make it an entirely different thing and not The Munsters?

Well presumably that'd be why it's not called The Munsters!

Here is how I envision the handling of the 'dramatic' Munsters -

Herman - bi-polar schizophrenic in conflict with his body image
Lily - Desperate Housewives style sex cougar unhappy with her marriage
Eddie - Twilight style conflicted teen bollox
Grandpa - a dull metaphor for generational conflict, a sort of vampire Gran Torino
Marilyn - a dull metaphor for alienation and divided loyalty, expect lots of social exclusion and shit romances

A more realistic version would feature a Romanian family moving into Mockingbird Lane, squatting in the house, fiddling the benefits system, sex trafficking Marilyn and using their supernatural powers to rob and steal.

I remember 'The Phil Silvers Show', my Dad's fav!

'The Beverley Hillbillies' was great.

I watched 'Cheers', 'Taxi' and 'Frasier'. Not much I follow now, except for 'The Simpsons'. :D

Laughing out loud

Well exactly; so why even slightly base it on it at all, or even allude to the fact? Seems odd.

Because it uses the same characters and premise.

It's not as though The Munsters owns the rights to 'monster family in a house' idea.

It's like doing a remake of 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em'; but instead of a comic farce, it's a dark psycho horror about this mental manchild in a beret who comes into someone's life and destroys it piece by piece, sending them mad.

SMDAE could easily be redone that way, should someone want to commission it.

Well yes, but my point is that it would then not be 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em', it would be something else.

Yes, as you say, it would be a realist version of a quite bizarre sitcom idea, that somehow worked brilliantly. Think a dark revision of it would be great.
