Possibly. Could be from anything!
Aghh you will, you will, you will!
Quote: DaButt @ April 4 2012, 7:10 PM BSTNah, you'd sound correct.
We share a common language and alphabet so we should be able to pronounce place names properly once we've been introduced to the local pronunciation. The alternative is "I found a bottle of War-sess-ter-shy-er sauce floating in the Thaymz River."
Yeah, but I still say there are no set rules. How would you have us pronounce "New Hampshire"? We say 'n-you', not 'noo'. Surely that's OK?

That's fine, there are Americans who pronounce it that way.
It's all about the common pronunciation. There are plenty of places here in Texas where the Spanish name has been corrupted by the masses. Once I learned that the city was called Blank-o instead of the Spanish Blahnk-o I changed the way I pronounce it. Every American uses the "sh" sound when pronouncing Michigan, so when British newscasters to use the hard "tch" sound they sound ridiculously wrong.

I disagree, Brits are forever rolling their eyes when an American mispronounces a UK place name - Eden-burg, Lye-cester, High Wy-com-bee, etc.
So it's a little hypocritical to say that the Brits can get away with mangling American place names - Mitch-again instead of Mishagun, etc. - and you can't use inventing the language as a defence because of a lot of US place names come from the Injuns or the Spics.
The Mary Land instead of Merralind pronounciation is also mangled here in London with Marylebone.
But there's going to be different pronunciation according to where you were brought up...we in England would sound right prats calling 'al u minium' 'al luminum' or adult as 'a dult'. Shucks.

Commonly, people say 'renumeration', does that make it right?
People who spend 3 pages discussing pronounciation.
For f**ks sake they're just words.
Aparently monkeys have to make do with just a 100 words. And do you ever hear them moaning about it?

That would have told us, except that you can't even spell it.
I was refering to the aquatic nomads who only speak in pronouns
They were being discussed on Chortle

Anyone can mispronounce a word and it's no big deal. It is a big deal if they continue to do so after being informed of the correct pronunciation.

But if it's all about common pronunciation, then as long as there's enough of them, they're right.

What's your point? 310 million Americans pronounce Michigan correctly.
