Too old to begin stand-up career?

Hi All,

After a long time dismissing the idea (me usually) Aid and I are seriously thinking about performing stand-up.
My main reservation is that I am 51 and apart from school plays (which I loved) and a couple of our videos I don't have any performance experience so am worried that I might let him down.
At work I have had reason to do presentations and chair meetings (lower management level) but this idea is totally different. Obviously.

However, I shall take advice if any offered as to whether 51 is really too old to begin.

But most people over 40 who start on standup are recovering from breakdowns.

Absolutely spot on! Aid had a go nearly 10 years ago but I never went to support him so he lost enthusiasm and gave up. I should have been there for him, preferably on the stage with him.

I'm sure we can muster a wee BCG posse if you want support at London gigs/shoulders to cry on/sympathetic drinks bought for you

Though if anyone was to take the trouble to suffer even the few minutes we might be allowed then drinks should be on us (or me to be precise as I'm the problem).

Pleasantly surprised by the response and currently feel quite confident.

Now to sharpen up the material.

I'm not gonna take the trouble to stand up on stage just to have people laugh at me!

I'm 43 tomorrow - and did my first stand up last night. Went OK, I think.

I forgot my second gag "I'm supposed to start with a lookalike. I bet you are probably all thinking I look like... a mid-life crisis".
