Derek - Pilot

Ricky Gervais' latest creation, Derek, will hit Channel 4 during April (we reckon Easter weekend).

Interestingly, what was originally a "sitcom pilot" is now a "bittersweet one-off comedy drama".

I think it sounds pretty interesting.
Can't wait to see Karl doing proper acting too.

I wonder what happened there then? Who made the decision? I seem to remember Gervais saying he hadn't been so excited about a thing he'd made since The Office. Hmm. Can't say I was looking forward to seeing him pull that face for a full series mind you.

The blurb you've got makes it sound like a downbeat version of Extras. I'm guessing that 'autograph hunting' will mean that random self-parodying celebrities will be popping up. How original for Gervais...

Do you use the word 'hit' advisedly?

I did consider the wording of my post, yes...

He has done Derek Noakes before-

Reminiscent of one of Peter Kay's early characters.

Time confirmed. Not exactly a hot comedy slot, but not terrible.

Ooh, after reading this review, I'm even more interested in giving this a look:

Is this a pilot or a one-off? That digital spy review says it's a pilot

I think it was a pilot, then somewhere along the line it was rebranded a one off. I suppose there's always a chance, depending on reaction/viewers, that it could turn back into a pilot.

It was produced as a "sitcom pilot" but Channel 4 are now calling it a "one-off bittersweet comedy drama", I think the term was.

In other words, after receiving the final edit they think it's a bit shit and aren't sure what to do. So they broadcast it, and if public reception is poor it's not been sold as a pilot so The Ego doesn't have any "Gervais sitcom cancelled" headlines to endure, whilst if it's really well received, they'll go "Oh, people liked this so much, we've ordered a full series of the characters."

Oh, you cynic!

Very much looking forward to this :)

They do give quite a lot away though, so if you don't want to know most of what happens keep away from the Digital Spy one!

From them, it sounds pretty good to me. Looking forward to it.
