How is Rowan Atkinson viewed in Britain?

I've seen bits and pieces, but how is he viewed across the pond as it were? I've heard folks say he's a genius and others say he's quite the fool. Perhaps he's both, I don't know.

Edited by Aaron.

I don't know but his son is great!

And he's looking much slimmer.

I guess I should learn to spell properly. I mean to say how is Mr. Atkinson viewed.

That was verry punny.

Here we go!

Through binoculars.

So what do you know of him Sandra? First thing I think I saw him in was Not The Nine O'Clock News. He was the rubber faced one of a team of four which for its time was quite revolutionary. Then of course he played the brilliant Black Adders and then the not so good The Thin Blue Line. And of course he is Mr Bean and Johnny English.

Generally very funny.

He's a genius.

That is all.

I really only know him from Mr. Bean. I think I'd like to find some of the Black Adders work. Is that what put him on the map?

Read my post above.

Blackadder's largely what has kept him on the map.

My first comment was infinitely funnier before the thread title was changed. Just saying.

too bad too .. it was very funny... It took me a minute to "get it" until I was typing my reply.

While not claiming to represent the British nation, I am not the only one who finds Mr Bean and Johnny English loathsome and this is just a man slumming it to buy racing cars.

This kind of third rate gurning is great for the kids and would be fine coming from the Chuckle Brothers. But for many people who grew up with him in the gorundbreaking Not the Nine O'Clock News and Blackadder, it's just sad and pathetic.

But hey so what, Mr Bean has given pleasure to so many diverse people around the globe; 9 year olds, illiterate goat herders and French intellectuals.

To be fair the very first Mr Bean half hour TV show was fantastic.

So different to everything that was around at the time.
