Critiques Page 3

Woah, someone's taking my points far too personally.

'Wishy washy emphasis'?! If you don't have a form in mind for the piece then by definition it's formless.

Writing with a form in mind gives one 'pretensions' does it?! Nonsense.

For heaven's sake calm down and get some perspective. I just said that sketches without an obvious format in mind are normally flagged up as "ideas" or whatever. I've got nothing against people bashing ideas about. Everyone does it. I certainly didn't say such stuff was 'worthless'.

A finished work HAS to have a medium!!

And if you guess most of this stuff is written for this forum alone - as regards the critique section, you're just plain wrong.

The medium it's written for is the forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn't mean it isn't intended for another medium, but most of the work here is work in progress and therefore can only be read in the context of the forum

... AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand breathe.

Custard Cream, anyone? :)

Mm, yes please.

Sorry, I just find the argument that if you just write a sketch without thinking radio, tv etc makes its formless is garbage. And in some ways I think people are trying to argue a point to make themselves seem more professional. Most people here are amateur, and TBH I see little worth in such amateur / pro tags, preferring to gauge my how funny I find things and or writers.

Fair enough.

But as a medium the forum is comparable to talking in the pub with your mates. I still don't think it can be called the finished article in any shape or form.

But I have no problem with that.

I think most people share on the critique thread to get opinions on how they can improve their material - destined for other things. Hence the title "critique"!!!

Writing specifically 'for' the critique forum is a contradiction in terms. I've no problem with this, and never said such stuff was 'worthless' as you seem to imply, but it shouldn't be taken as read IMO that you write with no real medium in mind.

I've never used such tags.
But I think it's pretty obvious I'm an amateur.

Writing without a form makes it formless. You can't dispute that. It's not a difficult concept.

:D

I just love writers! We are an argumentative breed, aren't we? (hmm! Who's gonna be the first to do it?) ;)

James,
Looking at your profile I see you have an English degree. Was it language or literature? Only this is starting to remind me of a discussion in a lit-crit lecture. Oh the joy! :P

Literature, of course.

I'm not picking a fight with anyone. I've just stated facts and said I've no problem with people posting whatever they want to on the forum. Why would I? Not my bloody place anyway.

I'm not going to rise to a silly argument. There's nothing to argue about!

On a brighter note James, love the new avatar.

I won't argue that. Nor have I argued that. The concept that seems to be difficult is the acceptance that not all writing on the critique is aimed at TV or Radio, but at the forum readership. The form of a piece of writing is the story not the medium on which it might possibly apppear.

I can understand writing just for the forum but I don't believe this is what most people do.

Writing for an audience using an accepted and popular medium, i.e. radio, film or stage, does not give you pretensions of being a 'professional'. Small theatre revues, local and hospital radio, pub performances, YouTube sketches et al are all amateur.

Pretensions of being professional are of course different to professionalism. Why not aim for that?

Ah, this argument is nuts.

I don't have a problem with this, but it's just a fact that most people have other things in mind as the end result and it's a bit absurd to get cagey about it.

Who said you could have the mixing spoon? It's not your turn.

Aaanyway I think we've all got our wires crossed as I love everyone and couldn't give two hoots what they post in the forum!

I regret ever mentioning it now.
