British Comedy Guide

Definitive version

So with many works of art there are multiple versions

For example Dr Zhivago book, film, mini series

Or Dune book, movie, mini series

Casino Royale book, radio play, camp movie, action movie

But which is best ?

SOotyj thinks in the above it's all movie, except Casino where its a draw

I strongly dislike the Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy movie. I hate when people feck about with stories I love. Tim Burton, as much as I love him also has a bad habit of doing this. I never saw the need in CATCF for the whole father storyline.

I do think, however, it all depends on what you see first. I love the film White Olelander but I know the book version is different so reading the book won't be the same.

HHGG is a law unto itself. The film is however widely agreed by fans to be a waste of space.
Casino I would just give to the film as Fleming is an appalling writer.
Schindler's Ark or List? I would go for the book but the film is stunning.

IMO Dune - the book;

I thought that the german (?) TV series of Robinson Crusoe was terrific when I was a lad - so I read the book - terrible! Long and boring, apart from the castaway bit which only takes up about 25% (? as I remember - maybe less) of the whole story.

I can't split "I, Claudius" (book and TV) which were both terrific.

First saw the film "Little Big Man" in the 70s and it's still my all-time favourite. Found the book and was totally shocked at what "Old Lodge Skins" did at the beginning. Complete turnaround in the film.

Hitch Hikers' Guide - loved the radio play, the book and the TV series - didn't like the film much.

HHGG is a tricky one. Yeh film major league stinks (the whole point is technology doesn't improve life so toaster bread knife enrages). But I prefer the TV version to the radio or book version.

Even though I'm sure I shouldn't.

nb Sky's version of Pratchett books are just beyond awful.

Read 'Dr. Zhivago' and wanted to take a red pen to it. Interesting enough but too many minor characters and separate stories.

The books abit sprawling and lifeless for my tastes.

But the film is just magnificent

Catch 22, the book.
Animal Farm, the movie.

Is that Animal Farm comment a puckish gag?

Catch 22 the film is very good, but yup not as good as the book.

Genesis the book or the band?

Hunt for Red October - Book.

One Day - Book.

Trainspotting - Film.

Exactly, whoever decided that the main theme was a rom-com with Arthur and Trillian completely missed the entire point of the books/radio/tv-series. Absolutely dreadful.

Good call on Trainspottin

And the earth is rebuilt

I no someone involved in the production.

Should I punch him in the back of the neck?

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption - The Book and the film are equally as good as each other.

The Running Man - The film was shite and the book was great. In many ways they only share a title because they are so different.

The Nightmare on Elm Street films - I hated the films (for not being scary) until I read the books. The books were better than the films.

All comic books are better than the movie versions except for:

Weird Science
Blade
Kick Ass
Road to Perdition
When the Wind Blows
Persepolis
Oldboy
American Splendor
Men in Black
Mystery Men
A History of Violence
Akira
The Mask
Wanted

:)

American Psycho - the book. The film's good but it's nowhere near as funny as the novel. Same goes for Lolita.

How old were you when you watched them?
They certainly scared the crap out of me. (At about 13+)
