Is cyber stalking a real problem? Page 4

(to be fair, AJGO is attractive and would definitely be towards the top of my list of BCG women to drug)

C'mon that's pushing irony a bit too much?

I think we use the word stalking a lot, because technology has changed faster than our ability to cope.

So where as in days gone by pornography was finding a stash of mags in dads tool shed or under a bush. And maybe if one was lucky lonley uncle Terry's video.

Now it's relentless hardcore stuff on your 3g mobile from any age. And it is having aparently a disturbing effect.

So with stalking. What previously would be listening to other people's conversations or putting up nasty messages on lamp posts.

Is available at the push of a button.

Hooray! \0/ Someone gets what I'm driving at!

But that utterly wasn't what you were saying!
Maybe you should work on saying what you mean.

Yes, cyber stalking is a real problem.. but if you want to avoid any contact/feedback and still stay on the internet, post something in Critique.

No, it's a joke. Just like Roo saying that I sit in the bush outside her house. This is a highly emotive subject that I'm trying to tackle rationally based on real world experiences and not attention grabbing headlines from the news.

That is exactly what I was saying - people inventing stalking scenarios in their heads based on no evidence whatsover.

As mentioned, I know women who have been stalked and my original reply to dellas was that if she was one of these people, she should definitely cover her tracks on the Internet.

Laughing out loud

Whether you accept drinks from a complete stranger or not is none of my business. But convincing yourself that all men are stalkers willing to drug your drink is incredibly sexist and insulting - and just a tad egotistical.

There are some self absorbed attention seeking women, just like their male counterparts.
But it's not a case of thinking that all men or even most men are stalkers or have malevolent intentions- it's not knowing which one out of the millions of decent men is actually a risk.
It only takes one man to ruin someone's sense of security, their ownership of their own body, their trust in humans. I don't feel like turning down a free drink from someone I don't know is too high a price to pay for hopefully minimising that possibility, and I certainly don't think that women attempting to be comfortable and sensible equates to being egotistical or paranoid or man-hating.
Being afraid of rape is not a political statement nor a personal foible.

I'm certainly in the "backs against the wall" club whenever RC walks into the room.

I completey agree with you AJ and you should do whatever it takes to make yourself feel safe, but this is not what I was driving at.

My point was more to do with the mass hysteria whipped up by the press. This week it's stalking, next week it's identity theft, the week after that it's suicide pacts on the Internet. Impressionable people can convince themselves that they are the victims of everything shown on the news, like societal hypochondriacs.

dellas freaked out about cyber stalking and asked if it was a real threat. It's only a real threat if you are genuinely being stalked.

That's because I like to see the look in your eyes.

The problem is in days of yore half the stuff people did to people, you like had to actually meet up or be near them.

I can't imagine being internet stalked or fraped or whatever is much fun.

I was chatting to an internet policy chap the other day who was telling me about these special web sites the children of domestic abuse victims can use to communicate with their fathers.

They're monitored and proxied and anonymized up the wazoo to prevent the dads from figuring out where the kids are. You can't even find the sites unless you're told where to look.

Serious business.

I would like to go on record and say RC has never sat in the bushes outside my house.

All he does is wank in my letterbox.

You got a "package" in your male-box! (mail-box).

I tried to wank in your letter box but it wouldn't fit so I had to leave it with your neighbour instead.

I want into a post box because it's like a dirty lottery.

It could be you!
