Calling a transvestite a freak doesn't help an argument about the merits of modern art

a) I was paraphrasing from an interview I saw of Grayson Perry about his V&A Exhibition on the BBC, in which the interviewer was more interested in Perry's private pecadillos then the artwork.

b) Tranny's are freaks.

As are people who misuse apostrophes.

Thinking Grayson Perry is a sculptor when.....he.....is a potter is an even bigger insult.

He works in a variety of mediums including bits of scuplture. But you are correct, making pots is his main source of fame.

EDIT: dressing up as a bird is his main source of fame.

It makes me sexually excited to display my apostrophe kink in public.

It's rare that I agree with Godot Taxi, but he has hit upon the same point as Tim Walker earlier - commissions are being handed out based on familiarity rather then talent. A 'star' name has to be attached otherwise it's not going to happen.

I can't go into any detail or name specific people or shows, but I 100% know this to be exactly the case.

EDIT: dressing up as a bird is his main source of fame.

He dresses up as a little girl or a cartoon rather than as a woman, in my opinion. Not sure what he says about it himself.

"He frequently appears in public dressed as a woman and he has described his female alter-ego variously as "a 19th century reforming matriarch, a middle-England protester for No More Art, an aero-model-maker, or an Eastern European Freedom Fighter"

There's four pitches for the BBC's Laugh Track right there.

Is it really necessary to insult individuals who happen to like something you don't?

Not necessary, no... but in criticism there is always an implied aspersion on of the taste of others.

You are right though that that if others are enjoying something it is mean spirited to belittle their enjoyment. (Note to self: stop posting in Doctor Who thread).

I just find it tired that the minority who like something get called pretentious and hipsters and if the majority like something they get accused of herd mentality and being incapable of original thinking. I'm all for belittling others tastes, just not when it's me :P

Isn't it more of a problem that the cognoscenti apparently cannot tell the difference either?

As has been said, modern art seems to come down to front and contacts; that and the perpetual fear of the cognoscenti of being outside of the cognoscenti which gives then a unique faculty for appreciating the Emperor's wardrobe. The latter point at least also seems to apply to Mr. Fielding.

The critics certainly need intellectually dim artists producing work of such loose meaning that it can be spun in any direction. The explanation for some sniping notices on the current Hockney show is that he doesn't need their puff or waffle - his work speaks for itself.

In the case of Noel, even if I don't laugh at something of his I still enjoy it because I'm primarily a visual person.

You can't be the Matthew Stott of Noel Fieldings show, he's beaten you to it.
If only there was a Godot type character to give this show what for.

*moved to the Doctor Who thread

You're just stating the obvious here. TV's a business and businesses tend to go with people who have a track record. Like it not Noel Fielding has a track record. He's been involved in a succesful show and has a name. And to be honest, the people who commissioned Luxury Comedy must be pretty happy because it's pretty much exactly what I expected it to be before watching it.

Prior to the Beatles, it was pretty much axiomatic that popular music would be written by songwriters, performed mostly by session men and sung by pretty boys who were interchangeable. Those pretty boys may have been talented --- one thinks of a certain Francis Albert Sinatra, or a certain Elvis Aaron Presley --- but they weren't expected to play Em7 or consider the position of the middle eight. I'd say that, overall, the results of allowing the pretty boys to play and write have been OK.

You just compared Ralf Little to the Beatles.

I suggest you never post again.

I know.

There is always the option, for those who seem to think everything is rubbish, to write something better themselves instead of constantly whingeing on the internet. If you put the time, effort and word count, that you do on here, into writing scripts you could have a dozen comedies under your belts now. :) :( :P :O ;) Cool Whistling nnocently Errr Angelic Unimpressed :S Geek Sick :| :|
(Take one, or more, each)

What if you think your own work is rubbish also? What then?
