How would you handle this?

I have a very small problem, though nonetheless I would like to know how you would all handle it, or how you think it "should" be handled.

Say at some point in a scene you have one of your characters plunge a spade into some muddy ground.
The next thing you want to see is a pile of earth and the top of the character's head poking out of a big hole.
So you want these to be joined together directly, but how do you go about it?
Does this, for example, warrent a scene change?
I was thinking of two ways to do it but don't know which would be best.
The first would be something like...

SCENE 1
X PLUNGES SPADE INTO TURF

MIX TO

SCENE 2
X IS STANDING IN A HOLE (ETC.)

Or would it perhaps be better to do something like:

SCENE 1
X PLUNGES SPADE INTO TURF.
CAMERA FADES OUT AND BACK IN. THERE IS NOW A HUGE PILE OF
EARTH WHERE X WAS STANDING (BLAH BLAH)

I know it's not exactly a huge issue, but I'd just like to know what you think I should do here.

I would suggest maybe:

SCENE 1
X PLUNGES SPADE INTO TURF.

CUT TO:
THERE IS NOW A HUGE PILE OF
EARTH WHERE X WAS STANDING (BLAH BLAH)

Oh darn it!! How come I didn't even consider that? :$

Thanks ContainsNuts.

Talk about overlooking things - one more :$ I think

Can anyone (Containsnuts) help me with a similar simple problem? I have a scene ,which is too long, and which I have had a problem shortening. However it's occurred to me that maybe there isn't a problem after all. Where there's a long passage of action on a tv screen can the tv action be a seperate scene like so:

SCENE ONE LOCATION#1
ACTION DESCRIPTION

CHARACTER#1
bla bla bla

CHARACTER#2
bla bla bla

and so on for quite some time minutes and then:

CHARACTER#1 LOOKS AT OVERHEAD TV MONITOR, SHOWING SPORTS PRESENTER

CUT TO:

SCENE TWO
ACTION DESCRIPTION

SPORTS PRESENTER
bla bla bla

GUEST
bla bla

and so on for some time

CUT TO:

SCENE THREE LOCATION #1
ACTION NAMELY BACK WITH CHARACTERS WATCHING SCREEN

CHARACTER#1
bla bla bla

CHARACTER#2
bla bla bla

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Simon, welcome to the BSG Wave

Laughing out loud Your edit made my post irrelevant. Thats what you should do^^

If you're worried about having too many scenes then write it as if the TV Presenter is in the room e.g

A TV IS ON IN THE BACKGROUND AND A SPORTS PROGRAM IS ON WHICH IS BEING PRESENTED BY (NAME OF SPORTS PRESENTER)

NAME OF SPORTS PRESENTER:
Blah

AJP are you saying my suggestion is a good one? If so many thanks.

AJP may thans. I was worried about having too few scenes so if my the TV bit is acceptable as a separate scene I'll go with that

Yeah thats how you do it. Every cut it is a new scene. If the TV is on in the room then do what I suggested above.
