A good friend may soon be in need of some great entertainment while recuperating. A Brit ex-pat with a region 2 player, my friend loves Dinnerladies. She thinks much less of some others that I like equally so, in shopping for a gift, I don't trust my Canadian takes on things. Is there anything on DVD that is like or equals Dinnerladies in the estimation of forum members?

Jam & Jerusalem?

Yes, a very good suggestion, AJGO. There isn't really a lot else I'd describe as quite the same vein as Dinnerladies, Rose: what else does your friend like?

Could always get some of the TV stuff Wood did before Dinnerladies.

'Early Doors' is gentle, lots of characters, warm like Dinnerladies.

Yes - anything Victoria Wood.

I also think in a way it was similar to The Thin Blue Line,

I'm not sure about other sitcoms but I know she likes Waking the Dead and MI5. I think Jam & Jerusalem is a great suggestion. Is all earlier Victoria Wood sketch comedy?

Not all, but the majority of her career.

.....pressed send too soon...

I love ThinBlue Line myself. Haven't seen Early Doors but it's on my wish list....

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Perhaps Getting On with Jo Brand?

:) The Vicar of Dibley or Miranda?

If your friend is a fan maybe try her on Victoria Wood's recent dramatic offerings. Housewife 49 and Eric and Ernie are both excellent.

Also some excellent Radio 4 programmes to record or on iPlayer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought of Housewife 49 which aired here once. I know she'd love that. I think she has Vicar of Dibley but probably not any of the others.

You know what they say about laughter... hope it works.

The Smoking Room, One Foot In The Grave, The Royle Family, Maggie and Her, Miss Jones and Son.

Cheers?
